Fated love: the unwanted bride

Chapter 2667: The Sweetness of Love

  • Next Chapter

It was drizzling this evening.

The wind outside was strong, with dead leaves falling from the treetops like butterflies, fluttering, twirling, then quietly spiraling down.

It’s raining in Cakago, and also in Old York.

The rain in Old York was much heavier than in Cakago, with gusty winds and torrential downpours.

Ten o’clock at night.

The light in the president’s office of the James Group was still on, becoming a unique glimmer in the night.

In the vast office, Sylvan Cheney sat at the desk, poring over documents with a furrowed brow.

The ashtray was littered with cigarette butts, and yet he seemed unsatisfied, lighting one cigarette after another, the nicotine stimulating his nerves.

The office was particularly quiet, with only the sound of Sylvan Cheney flipping through papers.

Halfway through a cigarette, his phone rang.

"Evan, are you still in the office?"

"Yes."

"Is work really that important? I want to eat grapes, really want to, can you buy them for me?"

"What about the maids?"

"I don’t want them to buy it; theirs don’t taste good. Only the ones you buy taste sweet, that’s called... love’s sweetness." Erin Janus chuckled lightly.

"I can’t go back right now, it’s raining outside."

"Then just put work aside for a bit. What needs to be done today? It’s just those optional data, market reports..."

"Work is a complicated thing."

"I can’t really feel that."

"You just haven’t experienced hardship."

"Yes, I haven’t experienced hardship. I was born a Little Princess, a young lady, and I don’t need to suffer. It’s my privilege, and I should use it well. I don’t want to wake up early to go to work for a bit of money, squeeze into the subway, drink with clients, or go through the trouble of negotiating deals. I’m just a young lady, and I don’t need to do those things."

Erin Janus talked non-stop on the other end, while Sylvan Cheney remained silent.

For a long while, there was silence on both ends.

Erin Janus thought Sylvan Cheney was angry, and said proactively, "I wasn’t trying to criticize you, don’t get me wrong. You’re very impressive in my eyes."

"It’s late, you should go to sleep."

"I can’t sleep without grapes. Could you buy some for me now and bring them home, please?" Erin Janus said.

"I told you, I still have work to do."

"Can’t you make an exception for a pregnant woman? Do you know how hard it is to be pregnant? Vomiting, chest tightness, insomnia, lack of appetite in the early stages, difficulty turning over with a big belly later on. You can’t eat this, you can’t eat that, and you can’t go to places you liked before. Do you know how painful it is? Of course, you wouldn’t know, you’re not a woman. It’s just some grapes, can’t you satisfy me a little? Mrs. Zhong next door, her husband takes her out every day to relax, buys her food, takes her to resorts for vacations, and calls her ’darling’ every day. I’m not even asking for much, yet you won’t oblige."

"You’re right, being pregnant is hard..."

"Right? But thinking about our daughter being born soon makes it worth it. It’s good that you understand how hard it is to be pregnant. I’ve never endured this kind of hardship before, I’m really exhausted. My back aches and I’m so tired now."

"Get some rest early." Sylvan Cheney seemed ready to hang up the call.

"Hey!" Erin Janus quickly called out to stop him, "You really are insensitive... Tell me, how did I fall in love with a man as insensitive as you? Fine, I won’t argue with you. I understand your personality."
