Chapter 743: Heavy Duty Of Providing Warmth To Mother-in-law
For a long, quiet moment, neither of them spoke. The ambient noise of the tribe seemed to recede into a peaceful, distant hum.
The cool night breeze rustled the autumn leaves overhead, carrying the faint scent of wild orchids and cedar smoke.
Under the flickering golden torchlight, they simply stood there together in total, unhurried peace, their eyes locked, sharing a quiet warmth that didn’t need grand words or martial titles to exist.
A sudden set of heavy, crunching footsteps echoed from the nearby gravel path as a pair of late-night patrol guards walked past, carrying tall flint spears.
The squad leader paused, snapping his fist to his chest in a crisp, respectful salute toward Sol and Kira, before continuing past the terrace toward the outer stockade.
The movement broke the trance.
Kira blinked, a sudden, charming flush creeping up her neck to burn the tips of her ears as she realized how closely she was standing to him in the open alley. She hastily pulled her hand back from his sleeve, biting her lower lip, her eyes darting up to meet his with a mixture of shy hesitation and quiet invitation.
"Um..." Kira cleared her throat softly, her voice dropping so low it was almost a whisper. "It’s really late. Should we... should we go to your place? Or mine?"
Sol caught the subtle, hopeful light dancing in her eyes, and for a split second, a sharp tug of desire pulled at his gut. He cleared his mouth with a short, polite cough, his mind rapidly shifting gears as a wave of fond amusement and subtle guilt washed over him.
But then his mind flashed back to the state she had been in all afternoon... running around the yards, checking ledgers, directing heavy labor crews, her shoulders weary and her fingers stained with charcoal.
He let out a low, sympathetic breath and gave a soft cough.
"You’ve been running around like a wild deer all day, Kira," Sol said smoothly, his tone laced with gentle, careful consideration.
"Your eyes are practically half-closed right now. Go to your lodge, get a proper night’s sleep, and rest your body. We’ll spend the whole day together tomorrow."
Before she could offer a disappointed protest, Sol stepped closer. He reached out, his palms gently cupping her cheeks and leaned down to plant a soft, lingering kiss directly on her smooth forehead.
The warmth of his lips pressed against her skin sent a sweet, dizzying shiver straight down her spine.
Kira’s eyes fluttered shut, her shoulders relaxing completely as her heart swelled with a deep, quiet happiness.
Any lingering disappointment vanished instantly, replaced by the warm, comforting knowledge that he cared for her well-being far more than just taking his pleasure.
"Okay," Kira whispered sweetly, stepping back with a radiant, shy smile gracing her lips. She picked up her wooden tablet, hugging it against her chest. "Tomorrow then. Don’t you dare try to slip away into the woods early."
"Wouldn’t dream of it, little hunter," Sol smirked, waving his hand. "Now go."
He stood by the torchlit post, watching her lithe, beautiful figure walk down the stone path toward her private quarters. She turned back once at the corner of the lodge, offering him one last, bright smile before slowly disappearing along the path.
The moment her footsteps faded into complete silence, Sol’s gentle, caring expression instantly melted into a thoroughly insincere, self-mocking smirk.
He rubbed his chin with his knuckles, letting out a low, theatrical sigh as he looked up at the silver moon.
"Sorry, Kira," Sol muttered inwardly, his tone dripping with blatant, insincere piety. "Even though I’d love nothing more than to tuck you into those furs and spend the night making you scream... if I go with you, who’s going to provide warmth, care, and physical comfort to your mother? The poor Warchief has been drowning in stress for days.
So, purely out of the kindness of my heart and for the sake of caring for my mother-in-law’s well-being... I’ll just have to selflessly sacrifice our happy time tonight."
Satisfied with his utterly hypocritical self-justification, Sol turned around and strode briskly toward his own quarters in the Feline Spire
He didn’t waste a single second.
Stepping into his residence, Sol stripped off his dusty leather jerkin and trousers, dumping them onto a wooden bench. He grabbed a heavy wooden bucket filled with cool, fresh mountain spring water, lifting it overhead, and dumped it straight over his head.
SPLASH!
The frigid water washed away the lingering dust of the subterranean cave, the faint, acrid trace of centipede hemolymph, and the sweat of his run.
The cool droplets glided over his broad, sun-bronzed shoulders and muscular chest, tracing the dense, volcanic contours of his core before dripping onto the stone floor.
He grabbed a rough linen cloth, thoroughly wiping himself down until his skin was clean and dry.
He pulled out a fresh set of clothes... a clean, soft linen shirt that fitted snugly over his broad chest, paired with comfortable, dark-linen trousers bound at the ankles with soft leather cords and ran a hand through his damp, dark hair, slicking his damp hair back from his forehead.
He smoothed down his collar, adopting a calm, composed, and utterly dignified expression.
Prim, proper, and ready for official business, Sol thought with a dark, wolfish grin flickering on his face.
Refreshed, clean, and carrying a sharp, expectant fire low in his gut, Sol stepped out of his residence and made a straight, brisk line toward the Great Lodge.
The Great Lodge loomed against the starry night sky like an ancient, sleeping behemoth.
The massive ironwood structure was bathed in the warm, flickering glow of four large braziers burning brightly at the base of the wide stone steps. The heavy cedar walls gave off a rich, resinous aroma that mixed with the cool night breeze.
As he reached the base of the massive limestone staircase leading up to the lodge, Sol slowed his stride.
He took a deep, steady breath, forcibly smoothing out the eager, wolfish grin on his face.
He cleared his throat, pulling his shoulders back and settling his face into a stern, deeply serious, and profoundly diligent look... the picture of a dedicated Supreme Spear reporting for high-level tribal strategy late into the night.
Stationed on either side of the massive, double doors were two towering Veynar veterans from the Lion Vanguard. They were clad in dark-hide clothes, holding broad-bladed flint pikes perfectly upright.
As Sol approached with a heavy, measured, and solemn step, his crimson eyes fixed straight ahead in profound seriousness, the two guards immediately straightened their spines to their absolute limit.
They slammed their heavy spear butts against the stone floor in a synchronous, deafening CLANG, snapping their left fists across their chests in the highest formal salute of the Veynar tribe.
"Lord Sol!" the guards saluted in unison, their voices filled with deep, unwavering respect.
Sol stopped before the heavy doors, offering them a firm, solemn nod. His tone was clipped, grave, and weighed down with apparent official burden. "Is the Warchief inside?"
"She is, my Lord!" the guard on the left answered hastily, taking in Sol’s serious expression and the sharp, disciplined aura radiating off him. "She has not left the Great Lodge since the evening watch!"
