"Immortal Master, you have a good eye! This is the patron deity of our nearby villages, extremely effective and grants every request!" The old man beamed, as if having his patron deity praised gave him immense face.

"Is that so? Old man, are you from around here?"

"Me? I am a servant of the River God, dedicated to sweeping away the dust and guarding the offerings!" He smiled, the wrinkles around his eyes deepening, making him look somewhat eerie.

Adam’s expression didn’t change. "River God? Is that the deity’s name? What kind of god is it?"

"The River God is the mountain god of this range, the deity possesses wisdom as profound as the mountains, sees through all things, and is great and powerful, granting people peace and protection!" The old man’s eyes grew brighter, praises flowing endlessly.

"I see, are there usually many who come to worship?" Adam didn’t dare directly ask about strangers, because the old man carried a faint trace of the Evil God’s aura, he was clearly polluted.

"Many, of course! Look at these offerings, almost every day, villagers from below come up to worship."

"It seems everyone truly respects and loves the deity!"

Adam nodded, he didn’t continue the topic. "Old man, may I go in and look at the statue? To offer my respects."

The two walked into the small temple, Adam instantly sensed a shroud of evil aura, he was startled inwardly but kept a perfectly calm exterior.

The statue’s surface was carved with complex runes and patterns, some old and some new, the new ones were likely the formation the Evil God used to control the villagers.

"It is indeed very sacred." Adam pretended not to notice anything unusual.

"Right." The old man knelt and bowed piously toward the statue before standing back up.

"Immortal Master, whatever you wish for, you can tell the deity, the deity is compassionate, even without tributes, the god will help you."

"Alright." Adam certainly didn’t dare make a real wish, as that might allow the Evil God to sense him.

He was disguised as an ordinary cultivator, his aura completely swapped, after pretending to pray, he spoke again.

"Thank you, old man, I wonder if I might stay overnight in the village? I’ve encountered some troubling matters, and the scenery here is quite nice, I would like to stay and relax my mind."

The old man had claimed no outsiders had ever come to worship, that meant whoever was playing tricks was very likely someone from within the village, so Adam wanted to go down and investigate, even if the old man was lying, Adam had to verify it, catching a key figure and uncovering how the Evil God influenced the Mysterious Yellow Great World would be a massive gain.

"Alright, then goodbye, old man." Adam smiled faintly and headed down the mountain.

"Take care, Immortal Master."

There is definitely something wrong with this old man, I need to find an opportunity to investigate him, Adam thought as he walked, soon arriving at the village below.

The village was very ordinary, earthy yellow houses and black roof tiles, a small stream flowing through it, children’s laughter intertwined with the sound of water, and villagers working in the fields outside.

If it weren’t for that faint trace of evil qi, this might have truly been an incredibly peaceful village.

However, Adam didn’t sense the evil qi on everyone, it seemed the Evil God’s influence was limited, and not everyone had been infected.
