Chapter 478
Adam’s arrival attracted the attention of some villagers.
"Young Master, who might you be?" A middle-aged man put down his farming tools and walked over.
"I am merely passing by and wish to lodge here for a few nights, I’ve encountered some vexing matters affecting my state of mind, so I am tempering myself in the mortal dust and wish to clear my head."
Adam was naturally lying, solely to secure a place to stay, this was the great thing about being a cultivator, simply mentioning an impact on one’s Dao heart saved him from inventing further excuses.
"Oh! So it is an Immortal Master out on tempering, welcome, welcome." The middle-aged man smiled warmly and patted his chest.
"My name is Dexter, a villager here, although our place is remote, we are very hospitable, I’ll find the village chief right now."
"Then I thank you, Brother Dexter." Adam smiled.
Under Dexter’s lead, Adam entered the village, along the way, many villagers cast curious glances, and some bold children ran over to ask questions, Adam smiled and responded one by one.
"Alright, we’re here, the one on the rocking chair ahead is our village chief." Dexter pointed at an old man rocking back and forth in a courtyard.
Adam’s eyes narrowed, the old man before him carried the thickest evil qi in the entire village, second only to the caretaker on the mountain.
His heart stirred, but his expression remained impassive as he followed Dexter forward, although the village chief possessed the heaviest evil qi, he showed no outward abnormalities, instead, he gave off a kind and amiable feeling, this only deepened Adam’s vigilance against the Evil God’s methods.
"Village Chief, this is a passing Immortal Master who wishes to lodge here for a few days," Dexter explained.
The village chief opened his eyes, sized Adam up with a smile, and nodded. "Welcome, welcome, it is truly an honor for an Immortal Master to visit, the village has empty rooms, feel free to pick any one."
After speaking, as if nothing had happened, he resumed rocking in his chair.
"Please don’t mind him, the village chief is just like that, but he’s a very good person." Dexter laughed.
"If you don’t mind, you can stay at my house."
Adam smiled and nodded. "Then thank you both, please forgive the intrusion."
Dexter led him home and arranged a clean guest room, seeing an outsider cultivator lodging here, other villagers came to greet him, asking about his background and purpose, Adam deflected tactfully, vaguely stating he was here to temper himself.
He noticed that while most villagers appeared warm and hospitable, a small few had a peculiar glint in their eyes, as if hiding a secret.
In the following days, Adam secretly investigated the village’s anomalies, he used concealment techniques to observe those suspected of being influenced by the Evil God, attempting to find traces of its control.
But everyone was exactly the same, nothing strange about them, no bizarre formations or hidden artifacts either, everything was incredibly peaceful.
Adam knew he had to add stimulation, otherwise, things would remain like this forever.
...
That very night, moonlight spilled over the tranquil village, its silvery radiance draping a mysterious veil over this rustic place.
A figure silently appeared at the village entrance, dressed in a black robe with a hood pulled up, his face completely hidden in shadow, giving off a chilling vibe.
This mysterious person moved soundlessly through the streets, his steps were light and swift, blending into the night, he stole nothing and disturbed no one’s slumber, like a ghost, no one sensed him at all.
He stopped at the first household’s door and lightly carved a complex symbol onto it, the symbol looked ancient and mysterious, exuding an indescribable aura.
After finishing the mark, he quickly left and proceeded to the next house.
The next morning, villagers began waking one by one, upon discovering a strange symbol carved into their doors, they couldn’t help but panic, gathering to fearfully discuss its meaning.
"What does this mean? Is some disaster about to happen?" a villager asked nervously.
"I’ve never seen such a symbol, it must have some special meaning," another answered with a frown.
"Could it be that Immortal Master..."
"Shut up! Do you want to die? You dare speak ill of the Immortal Master?"
The villagers gathered in the village center to discuss the incident, they guessed the mysterious person might be an evil sorcerer, or an envoy of some wicked power, they worried the mark foreshadowed misfortune, plunging the village into panic.
Right then, the village chief stepped forward and pacified everyone. "Don’t panic, let’s calm down first, this mark might just be a warning, or a prank, go home and ask the children what they were doing last night, if it’s not a child’s prank, we will go up the mountain to worship the Mountain God!"
The crowd nodded and went home to question their children.
Adam hid his aura in a corner, observing everything.
When everyone returned, the conclusion was clear, it wasn’t a child’s prank, the profound mark didn’t look like something a child could draw, even if they could, with so many households, one or two children couldn’t have managed it all, and every parent confirmed their children were sound asleep.
Standing in the corner, Adam calculated his plan, the symbol had successfully triggered the villagers’ panic, now he wanted to see if the Evil God would react when this village faced an unknown fear.
The village chief stepped forward again, voice firm. "Since it’s not a child’s prank, we will follow tradition and go up the mountain to worship the Mountain God to pray for protection."
The villagers nodded, they prepared the necessary items for worship and readied themselves for Mount Demon’s Ridge, Adam blended into the crowd, preparing to go along.
The large procession arrived at the foot of Mount Demon’s Ridge and began the solemn worship ceremony, the villagers prayed piously, hoping the mountain god would bless them with peace and safety.
