Chapter 103 — Gryffindor Points Are Not Many
Snape admitted that he hated Harry Potter, but Harry was Lily’s son. Even if it was only because of his guilt over Lily’s death, he would still let Harry live.
If Dumbledore said that Harry needed to face Voldemort, then so be it.
But Vesey was different.
She understood nothing. She knew nothing. She was just a poor, weak little girl.
Snape thought of her pitifully, then heard Vesey talking about avenging her parents.
His throat suddenly tightened.
He stood there in a daze, thinking: If Vesey knew that he was also responsible for her family’s death, would she want to kill him?
It was possible, wasn’t it?
This child was just like Lily. Even Lily had dared to face Voldemort.
She was stronger and braver than Potter.
How could he stop her from pursuing revenge?
Seeing her face the chess pieces for Potter and the others, Snape almost cried.
During this entire ordeal, he had repeatedly wanted to save Vesey, but he also understood that this was the path she had to take.
If defeating Voldemort was what she wanted, then he would definitely help her accomplish it.
For Lily’s sake—or for Potter’s.
Snape gently picked Vesey up in his arms.
He wanted to take Vesey to the hospital wing, but Dumbledore stopped him.
"No, no, Severus. I have returned to this point in time. You know, I came back using a Time-Turner. I cannot change history. When I arrived, I saw Vesey!"
Snape frowned.
"Why are you treating a child like a criminal the moment you enter a room?"
Dumbledore stared at him dumbfounded.
Did this man have no shame saying something like that?
Vesey was lying there unconscious. Of course he was worried about her too.
And finally...
He glanced at Snape guiltily and said hesitantly, "Severus, you need to go and bring those two children back up. They can’t get out by themselves!"
As Dumbledore spoke, Snape saw Hermione and Ron rushing out together.
Dumbledore pushed Snape forward, putting him directly in front of Ron and Hermione.
"Oh no! Snape stole the Philosopher’s Stone!"
When Ron saw the black robes, he assumed it was some professor and shouted excitedly.
Hermione immediately kicked him hard.
Only then did he realize that it was Snape, who was looking at them with a sneer.
"Professor... someone stole the Philosopher’s Stone. Harry went in!"
Hermione quickly explained.
Snape snorted.
He looked at Ron and said, "Twenty points from Gryffindor for slandering a professor!"
Ron closed his eyes in pain.
His poor Gryffindor!
Why did it feel like they were constantly losing points?
"Oh, right! There’s Vesey..."
Hermione suddenly remembered.
But when she saw Vesey lying nearby, she breathed a sigh of relief.
It seemed Professor Snape had already found her.
She wanted to pick Vesey up and leave with her.
Snape blocked her.
"Dumbledore is coming. Go find him!"
Hermione’s heart stirred.
After all, Dumbledore was obviously more trustworthy than Snape.
She glanced worriedly at Vesey, thought for a moment, and then ran forward determinedly.
She couldn’t get out while carrying Vesey herself, so she would go and find the Headmaster.
Snape stood behind them and waited until they were about to climb out before helping them up.
Then he walked back, intending to stay by Vesey’s side.
As soon as he returned, Dumbledore cast a Disillusionment Charm on him.
"When I came over, I didn’t see you. I only knew that someone was here."
Snape looked at him.
Dumbledore spoke leisurely.
Snape didn’t care. He simply looked at Vesey’s face with a nostalgic expression.
But he didn’t get to look for long.
After a while, he saw Hermione pulling Dumbledore toward them.
As soon as Dumbledore entered, he saw Vesey and Snape, who had been placed under a Disillusionment Charm.
After saying a few words, Dumbledore first checked Vesey’s condition. Once he confirmed that she was all right, he breathed a sigh of relief.
Then he hurried toward the chamber containing the Philosopher’s Stone.
Seeing this series of actions, Snape’s expression softened slightly.
At least Dumbledore wasn’t completely heartless. He seemed to care about Vesey after all.
Snape was about to pick Vesey up and take her to the hospital wing.
But the moment he touched her, a burst of black mist suddenly rushed out of the room.
It was Voldemort.
He shouted as though he had just discovered a wonderful prize.
"Potter, you deserve this!"
Snape barely had time to react before Voldemort rushed past Vesey’s body.
The faint color that had been in her face moments earlier suddenly disappeared, leaving her as pale as paper.
Snape almost thought she was dead.
In his panic, he cast several spells at Vesey. Judging from the colors of the spells, he realized what she needed and immediately took out several bottles of healing potions and poured them into her.
Then, his eyes red with fear, he picked Vesey up and ran outside.
At the intersection, he encountered Dumbledore.
Dumbledore looked apologetic.
"Severus, I can’t change—"
"!"
Snape shouted furiously.
"In your eyes, what matters most about your so-called savior is simply making sure Vesey dies! What difference is there between you and him? You’re both executioners!"
Dumbledore had returned with a Time-Turner.
How could he not know what Vesey would be subjected to later?
Yet Dumbledore had still prevented Snape from taking Vesey away early.
Snape took Vesey to the hospital wing with a cold expression.
Madam Pomfrey was horrified.
She was almost in tears as she treated Harry and Vesey at the same time.
"How can a school possibly let a child end up like this?" she asked angrily.
Snape looked at Dumbledore with bloodshot eyes.
"If something happens to her, Dumbledore, I wouldn’t mind turning to the Dark Lord!"
"Even if he was the one who killed Vesey?" Dumbledore asked softly.
Snape froze.
Then he gave a bitter smile.
Yes.
Who could he trust?
He couldn’t trust anyone.
Dumbledore might sacrifice Vesey for the sake of the future, while Voldemort would never let Vesey go.
How else was he supposed to save this child?
"Dumbledore, you made an Unbreakable Vow with me, and you have to help me protect Vesey.
"Now I must make an Unbreakable Vow to guarantee Vesey’s life. If you hurt her in any way, then you die!"
Dumbledore’s blue eyes showed no surprise.
He had long known that this would cause Snape to revolt.
However, he still had to allow Voldemort to hurt Vesey.
Only after Voldemort and Vesey developed a genuine hatred for each other would Vesey never turn toward Voldemort.
This was the first step Dumbledore had taken after abandoning the idea of allowing Vesey to die.
Of course, it hadn’t been deliberate planning on his part.
Before using the Time-Turner, he had never expected Voldemort to do something like this to Vesey.
But after it happened, he had an idea.
So he used the Time-Turner.
He wanted to make absolutely certain that Vesey was genuinely hurt by Voldemort, ensuring that hatred would form between them.
Perhaps then he could finally feel more at ease about Vesey.
He looked seriously at Snape.
"If you insist, then, Severus, I am willing to make an Unbreakable Vow with you.
"If Vesey is ever seriously injured again because of me, I am willing to give my life as payment."
