Chapter Thirty-Six: Harry’s Apology

"Late? Mr. Potter, I should really turn you two into alarm clocks so you know what time to get to class!"

Professor McGonagall said angrily.

Harry and Ron were startled.

"Sorry, Professor. We couldn’t find our way..."

Professor McGonagall snorted.

"Then perhaps I should turn you two into maps so you won’t get lost!"

She glared at Harry and Ron before pointing toward the corner.

"Go sit down. If I find out you’re late again, I’ll have to ask you two to leave!"

She returned to the podium and said seriously, "Transfiguration will be one of the most dangerous and useful subjects in your entire school curriculum, so I hope you will take every one of my classes seriously!"

No one dared to speak.

Although the Transfiguration lesson had only just begun, Professor McGonagall had already established her authority.

The moment they met her, the students knew that she was not someone to take lightly.

After saying this, Professor McGonagall officially began the lesson.

What she taught was complicated, difficult, and obscure.

Vesey felt dizzy just listening to it, and for a moment she wondered whether she really wasn’t cut out for school.

Just as she was wondering whether she was destined to be branded a poor student from her very first class, she suddenly remembered the wonderful use of Energy.

After questioning the System, she had discovered that one point of Energy could be used to learn an entire book.

One point of Energy...

Vesey used it rather shamelessly.

In an instant, the entire book on Transfiguration techniques flooded into her mind.

And it wasn’t as though she had merely memorized the contents. She had completely mastered them, as if she had practiced them countless times.

Now, when Vesey listened to Professor McGonagall’s lesson again, she felt as though she had heard it countless times before. It was so familiar that she could almost explain many of the details herself.

This wasn’t an illusion.

Because after Professor McGonagall finished explaining the theory, she handed everyone a match.

"Now, use the principles I just explained to turn these matches into silver needles."

Vesey could already cast the spell, but she hadn’t understood the underlying principles before. She had simply relied on her wand to force the transformation.

Her wand could directly draw upon her magical power through sheer force and achieve whatever result she wanted.

As long as Vesey had enough magic power, she could cast the spell.

But she had never relied on understanding the principles behind a spell and then applying them.

Vesey looked down at the match in front of her. Countless Transfiguration techniques surfaced in her mind.

This time, she raised her wand and gave the match a light tap.

The match immediately transformed into a slender silver needle.

To Vesey’s surprise, the amount of magic she had used was far less than when she relied on brute force.

Obviously, this was the difference between skill and brute force.

Using the proper technique could save an enormous amount of magical power.

Vesey marveled at the discovery.

However, this wasn’t something others could easily imitate.

After all, Vesey had used Energy to completely absorb the contents of the book, just as though she had studied it under Professor McGonagall herself.

It wasn’t that her Transfiguration skills were already as good as Professor McGonagall’s. Rather, her understanding of the book was already comparable to Professor McGonagall’s own.

"Very good, everyone. Look! Miss Potter succeeded on her first attempt!"

Professor McGonagall surprisingly picked up Vesey’s silver needle and showed it to the class.

Then she announced loudly, "Because Miss Potter was the first to succeed, I must award Slytherin ten points!"

She even gave Vesey a particularly kind smile.

Then she urged the Gryffindor students not to fall too far behind and not to embarrass her.

Unfortunately, by the time the Gryffindor class ended, Hermione had only just managed to make a slight change to her match.

Professor McGonagall was therefore very strict with them, assigning everyone except Vesey a large amount of homework.

Fortunately, there was only one Transfiguration class on Monday, so they could spend the rest of the day working on their assignments.

After Transfiguration ended, Harry came looking for Vesey.

Vesey thought he might be angry, but the moment Harry saw her, he immediately began apologizing.

"The Sorting Hat said you wanted to go to Slytherin with me, Vesey, but I don’t really like Slytherin. So I thought about it and decided not to go. Vesey, I’m sorry!"

Harry looked a little embarrassed.

He had originally intended to go to Slytherin with Vesey, but after remembering what Hagrid had said about Voldemort also having been a Slytherin, he couldn’t bring himself to join that House.

Vesey shook her head.

She put on a generous expression.

"It doesn’t matter. I understand my brother’s concerns.

"Actually, when I first heard that Voldemort was a Slytherin, I didn’t like that House either. But when I thought about Professor Snape, I stopped caring about it.

"Brother, I always feel like the professor is lonely. I want to keep him company. I know I should spend more time with you too, but..."

Before Vesey could finish, Harry reached out and ruffled her hair.

"It doesn’t matter. Your brother understands!"

For example, Harry also thought Hagrid was a very good person. Since Hagrid didn’t like Slytherin, Harry didn’t like Slytherin either.

Vesey had met Snape first, so she felt that Slytherin was a perfectly good House and that there was nothing wrong with it.

Only...

Harry hesitated.

He didn’t know whether he should tell Vesey that, for some reason, his scar had hurt the previous night when Snape looked at him.

Although Vesey had always thought Snape was a very good person, giving Harry a somewhat preconceived impression of him, Harry still had the strange feeling that the professor didn’t like him.

But when he saw how happy Vesey looked, he decided not to tell her.

He thought that perhaps he had simply been mistaken.

After all, the school year had only just begun. How could there be a professor who already hated him?
