Chapter Fifty-Nine: The Levitation Curse
When Vesey woke up on the morning before Halloween, she could already smell the aroma of roasted pumpkins drifting through the corridors.
Pumpkin lanterns hung everywhere, along with all kinds of strange decorations.
Vesey yawned, ate breakfast, and then went to Charms class with Cassandra and the others.
In this lesson, Professor Flitwick planned to teach them how to make objects fly.
He also specifically asked Vesey to talk about the wings she had created for Neville before.
Vesey still hadn’t managed to improve the spell.
The wings created by her Glider Charm still couldn’t last very long. At most, they looked beautiful, creating a pair of large wings on the caster’s back.
Even so, her spell had quickly become popular throughout Hogwarts.
Most of the girls liked creating a pair of wings like this, making themselves look like angels.
Professor Flitwick had naturally seen these wings as well, so he was curious and asked Vesey where she had gotten the inspiration for them.
Vesey repeated the explanation she had previously given Madam Hooch.
Professor Flitwick listened with great satisfaction.
"If Vesey uses a spell like this in my class, I’ll definitely give her ten points!"
Unfortunately, by the time Professor Flitwick had learned about the spell, Vesey had already used it during Flying lessons.
After having Vesey demonstrate the wings, Professor Flitwick moved on to the Levitation Charm.
He explained many of the things they needed to pay attention to when casting it.
Then he divided the students into pairs and gave each pair a feather.
Vesey’s partner was, of course, Cassandra.
Cassandra was extremely proud, and her relationship with the other Slytherin girls wasn’t particularly good.
Or rather, she simply looked down on everyone.
Everyone except Vesey.
So having her practice with Vesey was exactly the sort of arrangement the professors had always preferred.
Harry was paired with Seamus.
He felt extremely lucky.
At least he was much happier than Ron.
After all, Ron’s partner was Hermione.
It was difficult to say who was more annoyed.
Neither of them liked the other.
If Hermione hadn’t learned from the diary that she and Ron would eventually become friends after Halloween, she might even have asked Professor Flitwick to let her practice alone.
Even if she had to work by herself, she wouldn’t want to spend time with someone who seemed so foolish to her.
"Okay, now everyone begin!"
Professor Flitwick announced loudly.
Then he looked toward Vesey.
Vesey didn’t disappoint him.
She raised her wand.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
she shouted.
The feather immediately floated into the air.
Professor Flitwick shouted excitedly,
"Look! Vesey’s feather is flying! Ten points to Slytherin!"
Vesey’s success obviously inspired everyone else to try harder.
But they quickly realized that geniuses really were different from ordinary students.
Harry and Seamus, for example, carefully followed Professor Flitwick’s instructions.
A swish and a flick.
Unfortunately, even after repeating the movement several times, their feathers didn’t move at all.
Seamus became increasingly frustrated and eventually poked the feather with his wand.
The feather caught fire.
They had to endure Professor Flitwick’s disapproving look before asking for another one.
Harry wasn’t doing much better.
Ron was having an even worse time.
His arms were practically spinning in circles as he swung his wand wildly at the feather.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
His arms were moving like a pair of windmills.
"You’re not doing it correctly!"
Hermione bluntly pointed out Ron’s mistake.
"Your movements are far too big. And you’re pronouncing it wrong. It’s Wingardium Leviosa. You have to draw out the ’-gar-’!"
Ron immediately glared at her.
"You sound like you’re really good at it. If you’re so good, why do you get beaten by Vesey every time?"
Hermione glared back.
Finally, she raised her wand, pointed it at the feather, and said,
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
The feather floated into the air.
Hermione coolly looked at Ron.
"Even if I’m not as good as Vesey, I’m still much better than you!"
Professor Flitwick also noticed that Hermione had successfully levitated her feather.
"Look! Miss Granger has made her feather fly! Five points to Gryffindor!"
Ronon’s eyes practically turned red with anger.
And Hermione continued making her feather rise and fall beside him, which only made him more irritated.
His temper had been pushed to its limit.
So the moment class ended, he rushed out with Vesey and Harry.
Once outside, he angrily complained,
"She is a nightmare! No wonder everyone can’t stand her. Vesey, I think you should stay away from her from now on. Don’t even bother talking to her. She’s really..."
Someone suddenly bumped hard into Ron and walked away.
It was Hermione.
Vesey sighed.
Sure enough, we’ve reached this point.
But watching the plot unfold was actually rather interesting.
Hermione’s personality at this point even made Vesey want to stay away from her.
But for the sake of maintaining her persona, she deliberately showed a disapproving expression.
"That isn’t right, Ron. You should apologize to Hermione. She didn’t do anything wrong. You can’t dislike someone simply because she’s smarter than you. That’s unfair!"
"I don’t hate her because she’s smart! I hate her because she’s always so high and mighty!"
Ron couldn’t help retorting.
"Just like that night. Even though it had nothing to do with her, she still insisted on following us. Then she couldn’t get back into the common room and blamed us for it!"
Vesey turned toward Ron.
Her face was filled with a determination he had never seen before.
She stood firmly on the moral high ground, ready to deliver her judgment.
"I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Hermione. She may not be very good at dealing with people, but she’s a good person.
"And if you had listened to Hermione and stayed in the dormitory that night, you wouldn’t have nearly been caught by Mr. Filch or almost eaten by a three-headed dog.
"No matter what, Hermione went through everything with us.
"Ron, it’s unfair for you to say those things about her.
"I think you’re acting just like those bad boys from the orphanage whenever you deal with Hermione.
"They used to isolate me because they thought I wasn’t pretty enough.
"And because I was always worried that they would get beaten or scolded by the matron, I wouldn’t let them run around recklessly.
"But they only thought I was being too controlling. They never understood that I was doing it for their own good!"
After saying this, Vesey wiped her eyes as though she were about to cry.
In reality, she was laughing so hard inside that she almost couldn’t hold it back.
Not going to lie, it feels pretty good to lecture someone from the moral high ground!
