Chapter 90 — Something’s Happened!
Hermione’s suggestion was obviously impossible to carry out. Hagrid hugged the little dragon tightly and cried his eyes out, and there was no way they could separate the two.
Eventually, the school bell rang, and they had no choice but to hurry back to the castle.
They could only pray that Malfoy wouldn’t report Hagrid.
To their surprise, Malfoy didn’t report anything.
It was as though he hadn’t seen what happened that day at all and hadn’t told anyone about it.
But everyone suspected that Malfoy was plotting something, so they took turns trying to persuade Hagrid to send the dragon away as soon as possible.
Hagrid, however, told them through his tears that he couldn’t bear to part with Norbert—and besides, he didn’t know who he could give him to.
"He’s still so young! He needs me as his mother!"
Hagrid said this while wiping away his tears.
Everyone was speechless.
After all, in just one week, the little dragon had already grown to three times its original size.
They couldn’t imagine what would happen if they continued raising a creature like this.
Would Norbert eventually burst through Hagrid’s hut?
"I’ve decided to name him Norbert. Norbert knows me now. Norbert, Norbert, where’s Mommy?"
Hagrid called out tearfully.
Harry and the others felt like horrible people.
But they really couldn’t take it anymore.
Judging from Norbert’s growth rate, there wouldn’t be enough room in the hut in another two weeks.
"Malfoy could report this at any moment!" Harry exclaimed helplessly.
"And besides, didn’t you promise Vesey that you’d send him away as soon as he hatched?"
Harry looked at Vesey, clearly hoping she would say something.
But there was no way Vesey could speak against Hagrid now.
That would easily offend him.
Her persona was supposed to be pure and kind, not rigid and irritating.
There was a huge difference between the two.
Besides, all Vesey had to do was put on a melancholy expression, and Harry and the others immediately stopped expecting anything from her.
They obviously assumed that Vesey had been moved by the bond between Hagrid and Norbert and couldn’t bear to separate them.
So they had to do it themselves.
"Charlie!"
Harry suddenly looked at Ron.
Ron was stunned.
"I’m Ron, not Charlie. Harry, are you stupid?"
Harry was certainly not stupid.
He immediately asked, "Isn’t Charlie raising dragons in Romania?"
Ron suddenly understood.
"Yes! Charlie might be able to raise a dragon. But I have to write to him and ask!"
Everyone turned toward Hagrid.
After they strongly insisted, Hagrid finally agreed to let them write to Charlie first.
The following week felt like an eternity to Harry and the others.
Hagrid was already overwhelmed.
Every day, someone had to go to his hut to help him.
Of course, there was no need for Vesey to go.
She looked so frail and delicate that Hagrid was the first to refuse to let her help feed Norbert.
He was afraid she would get hurt.
Harry and the others were relieved.
At least Hagrid still had some sense and hadn’t been completely carried away by Norbert.
They also thought Hagrid was right not to let Vesey go. They were worried that Norbert might eat her.
There had been no reports of Norbert eating people, but whenever they looked at Vesey’s adorable little face, they couldn’t help imagining her as a helpless little baby who couldn’t take care of herself.
A dragon could easily mistake her for food.
So Harry and Ron took turns going to Hagrid’s hut at night to help.
It was midnight on Wednesday.
Hermione and Harry were waiting in the Gryffindor common room.
Then the door opened.
Ron took off Harry’s Invisibility Cloak and suddenly appeared in front of them.
His face was extremely pale.
He held out his hand for them to see.
"It bit me!"
Ron’s finger was almost bitten off. It was covered in blood and still bleeding.
"I used a healing spell, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Let Vesey try tomorrow. If that doesn’t work, I might have to go to the school hospital!"
Harry and Hermione both breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, they hadn’t let Vesey go.
If Ron had been bitten this badly, Vesey would probably have been in an even worse state.
"I thought it was going to bite my finger clean off! And let me tell you, dragons are the most terrifying creatures in the world.
"But Hagrid acts as though the dragon is some poor little furry toy. He wouldn’t even let me scare it, and then the dragon bit me! He even said it was because the dragon loves me!
"The worst part is that when I was leaving, I heard him singing a lullaby to the dragon. I couldn’t take it anymore. I just want to send that dragon away!"
Ron ranted furiously, looking as though he wanted to chop Norbert into pieces.
"When is Charlie going to reply? I can’t take this anymore. If this keeps going, Hagrid is definitely going to be reported. He’ll get fired, and he might even go to prison!"
At that moment, there was a tapping sound against the window.
They immediately looked over.
Then they jumped to their feet.
"It’s Hedwig!"
"Charlie must have written back!"
They hurriedly opened the window and let Hedwig inside.
Hermione eagerly took the letter from Hedwig’s leg.
"Do you mind if I open it?"
Ron shook his head.
Of course he didn’t mind. There was no way he could open a letter with a finger that was practically hanging off.
Hermione quickly opened the letter and read it.
«Dear Ron,
I’m very happy to take the dragon, but getting him here won’t be easy. Some of my friends are coming to visit me next week. You can take the dragon to the school rooftop, and they’ll find a way to transport him from there.
How about midnight on Saturday?
Please write back as soon as possible!
Love,
Charlie»
The three of them immediately told Ron to write back and agree.
Harry looked at Ron.
"Then it’s just the two of us. On Saturday night, we’ll put on the Invisibility Cloak and take Norbert to the rooftop!"
He believed this kind of physical work should be left to the two boys.
Ron and Harry could carry Norbert together.
If Hermione had to help carry such a heavy dragon, she’d be exhausted. She could stay behind and keep watch instead.
As for Vesey...
Harry had never even considered making his sister do the work.
But plans never survived contact with reality.
The next morning, Ron was sent to the school hospital.
The hand Norbert had bitten—and even his entire arm—had swollen up like an elephant’s leg.
Madam Pomfrey immediately knew that he’d been bitten by a dragon.
Harry and the others could only deny it.
Ron even closed his eyes and pretended to be unconscious.
Fortunately, Vesey was there as well.
She put on a pleading expression, which made Madam Pomfrey sigh deeply.
In the end, she only asked Ron where the dragon had come from.
Harry and the others originally thought Ron would recover quickly.
Unfortunately, when they came to see him that evening, Ron was still drinking an extremely bitter potion.
His entire face twisted in disgust as he swallowed it.
Madam Pomfrey looked at him as though he completely deserved it.
After she left, Harry and the others wanted to ask Ron how he was doing.
But before they could say anything, Ron spoke desperately.
"Something’s happened!"
