I Can Devour Spirits
Chapter 632 - 403: Too Dangerous
Duan Rong and Zhu Peng were in the pavilion, eating stewed fish. As the clay pot was almost empty, both of them were slightly tipsy.
Zhu Peng stretched out his leg and almost kicked over an empty wine jar. He laughed, "Brother Duan, I didn’t expect you to be not only excellent at investigation but also have such a good tolerance for alcohol. Since childhood, I’ve never really admired anyone when it comes to drinking. Today, I’m genuinely impressed!"
Duan Rong burped and laughed, "Alcohol tolerance is something you’re born with..."
As Duan Rong was speaking, he suddenly furrowed his brow and abruptly turned his head to look behind him.
At the moment he turned his head, a figure leaped over the high wall from the shadowy darkness, swiftly approaching like a wild cat.
Seeing Duan Rong suddenly turn his head, Zhu Peng was naturally surprised and looked in the same direction, immediately noticing a shadow dashing toward them.
Zhu Peng grabbed his knife and jumped up, shouting, "Where did this thief come from, stirring trouble on my turf?!"
He was about to rush out of the pavilion when Duan Rong, still seated, calmly said, "It’s Zhu Cheng."
"Zhu Cheng?!"
At that moment, the shadow had closed in, and under the light, it was indeed Zhu Cheng.
Zhu Peng immediately jumped in frustration, cursing, "What’s wrong with you? In the middle of the night, there’s a door you don’t use, but instead jump over the wall."
Zhu Cheng shot him a sidelong glance, stepped to the pavilion entrance, and said to Duan Rong and Zhu Peng, "Something’s happened!"
Zhu Peng, seeing Zhu Cheng’s grave expression, felt a stir in his heart and quickly asked, "What happened?"
Zhu Cheng replied, "You two come with me. I’ll explain on the way!"
As Zhu Cheng spoke, he had already moved again and dashed out.
Zhu Peng glanced at Duan Rong. Duan Rong said, "What are you looking at me for? Aren’t you going to follow?"
After speaking, Duan Rong swiftly dashed out, chasing after Zhu Cheng like a storm.
"Damn it!"
Zhu Peng immediately moved as well, and followed them, though he noticed the two were almost simultaneously leaping over the wall.
"You two, wait for me!"
Since Zhou Wei had poisoned those craftsmen, it meant his identity had already been exposed. Zhu Cheng, within the Ministry of Justice, had already sent people to the city gates to intercept Zhou Wei from leaving the city.
He himself immediately headed to Zhou Wei’s residence. Zhu Peng’s residence was conveniently located between the Ministry of Justice and Zhou Wei’s place, so he stopped by to call on Duan Rong and Zhu Peng, just in case there was a need for backup.
As Zhu Peng climbed over the high wall, only the dark night surrounded him, without a trace of anyone.
"Those two bastards?!"
Zhu Cheng was urgently racing against time, too preoccupied to wait for him.
Zhu Peng, having no choice, chose a direction and chased after them.
Zhou Wei’s residence was in a rather secluded courtyard in another neighborhood.
It was already deep into the night, with quiet surroundings. Only the dim light from the main room was visible through a half-open door, casting a narrow, mottled shadow in the courtyard.
Suddenly, two shadowy figures almost simultaneously landed in the courtyard.
One shadow, swift like a wild cat.
The other figure, seemingly slow yet fast, floated down like a leaf without a sound.
It was Duan Rong and Zhu Cheng, who had arrived swiftly under the cover of night.
Even in the shadowy night, with only dim light from the main room, both of them, being experienced, immediately noticed a person standing by a large tree not far from the main room.
The silhouette stood beside the tree, motionless.
Zhu Cheng quickly drew his knife from his waist, the cold light flickering in the night.
He stepped forward cautiously, looking at the shadow beside the tree, shouting, "Who’s there? Show yourself!"
Duan Rong, behind him, sighed and said, "It’s already a corpse!"
"A corpse?!" Zhu Cheng’s heart sank with surprise, despite the eerie night, it still seemed like the person was standing by the tree—how could it be a corpse?
Suddenly, True Qi in Duan Rong’s palm stirred slightly as he gently pushed it toward the main room door from a distance. With a creak, the door, originally ajar, suddenly swung wide open.
Yellow light poured out, illuminating the big tree.
It was Zhou Wei standing beside the tree!
More accurately, he was pinned to the tree with a Flying Saber through his throat.
He was dressed in ordinary clothes, with a bundle at his feet. Evidently, he had been shot while attempting to escape.
The dim light illuminated Zhou Wei’s face, showing his eyes wide open, filled with resentment and unwillingness at his moment of doom.
Zhu Cheng felt a tightness in his chest.
With Zhou Wei dead, it was the worst possible outcome she could imagine.
Zhou Wei’s death likely meant the trail had gone cold.
Zhu Cheng swiftly dashed to Zhou Wei’s side, quickly checked the body. Seeing the gaping hole in Zhou Wei’s throat caused by the Flying Saber.
Zhu Cheng’s eyes scanned, noticing his knife still at his waist—he hadn’t drawn it, clearly having not responded before being killed by one stroke.
Zhou Wei was also a True Qi Realm Second Level adept! And he was known for his vigilance!
What kind of person could kill him with a single face-to-face encounter?
The blood from the wound hadn’t fully drained yet. In the dim light, the gory sight was still discernible.
Zhou Wei’s death must have occurred within the last half-hour.
At this time, Duan Rong also came over, reaching out to directly pull the Flying Saber from Zhou Wei’s throat, embedded in the tree. Under the light, it was a Shuttle Dart made of black iron.
With the Shuttle Dart removed, Zhou Wei’s body slightly shook, though already stiffened slightly, it did not immediately collapse.
