Chapter 720: Chapter 720: How Long Does It Take to Forget Someone?

The old woman remained silent, simply walking past her into the house and placing the food tray on the nightstand.

Ivy Tanner followed her inside, asking again, unwilling to give up, "Ma’am, please, just tell me."

The old woman lifted her hand, pointed to her mouth, and then shook her head.

Ivy Tanner’s heart clenched. "You can’t speak?" she asked, startled.

The old woman nodded.

Ivy Tanner instinctively took a step back, the ache returning to her chest.

’Ethan Kingsley really was a man of his word. He said he would make her live out her days in solitude, and he’d even sent a mute old woman to care for her...’

’Heh... So ruthless.’

’It’s fine. Being alone is better, anyway. At least I don’t have to watch my back for people who want me dead.’

’This is great. I’m perfectly happy with this arrangement.’

’As for the child in my womb... once it’s born, my part will be over.’

’What does Ethan Kingsley’s child have to do with me?’

’Fine. Let it be.’

Resigned to her new life, Ivy Tanner walked to the bed and sat down. She picked up the bowl and chopsticks and began to eat in silence.

The old woman watched her eat, the corners of her mouth lifting into a faint smile. She made a few gestures in sign language, which Ivy unfortunately didn’t understand. Still, Ivy replied politely, "Thank you, Ma’am. The food is delicious."

The old woman nodded, signed a few more things, and then turned to leave.

After dinner, Ivy Tanner took a good look around the place.

This was no luxury villa, but a single-story wooden house in the middle of nowhere, tucked away in the mountains. It was enclosed by a tall bamboo fence, with an empty plot of land for a front yard and a vegetable garden out back.

One thing was certain: she was in the countryside. The air was crisp and clean, but also very cold.

Ivy Tanner threw on a jacket and stepped out into the pitch-black yard. She looked up at the starless night sky. The loneliness was terrifying; not a single star was willing to keep her company.

She walked over to the open area and sat on a large rock. She had slept for too long today and wasn’t tired now. ’I’ll just sit here and zone out for a bit.’

Just then, the old woman approached, carrying an electric lantern. With one hand, she made a few simple signs at Ivy.

’She probably wants me to go back inside and rest?’

Ivy didn’t understand, so she said, "Ma’am, you should go get some sleep. I slept so much today that I’m not tired. I’ll head back in a little while."

The old woman signed again, but Ivy still couldn’t understand.

"Ma’am, I really can’t understand you. Could you please go get some rest? I won’t cause any trouble, I promise. I’ll go back inside in a little bit."

The old woman shook her head with a sigh and went back inside.

Ivy tilted her head back, gazing at the night sky. "Starting today," she murmured, "who should I try to forget first? Sinclair, or Mr. Rhodes?"

’How long does it take to forget someone?’

’A year? Two years? Ten? Or a whole lifetime?’

’How terrifying...’

The thought of spending so much time all alone filled Ivy with the sudden urge to leave this world. But for the sake of the child in her womb, she had to endure.

’This child is my last lifeline. I have to endure.’

「Dawn broke.」

After finishing breakfast, Ivy Tanner eagerly ran outside, wanting to explore and see where she was.

In the yard stood a hand-pump well. It was surprisingly modern, with a faucet already attached.

When she stood at the gate, she was met with the sight of a forest that stretched on without end. She walked a full circle along the fence line, but all she saw was the same dense, gloomy woods. There wasn’t a single sign of civilization.
