Rajmata Satyavati remained beside Gandhari for a few more moments, watching her peacefully unconscious daughter-in-law as the physicians continued attending to her and the newborn children.
Once she was certain that Gandhari was stable and that all the children were being properly cared for, Satyavati finally stepped out of the chamber.
The moment she crossed the doorway, Bhishma and Karna immediately rose from their places, their expressions filled with barely contained worry.
Satyavati looked at them and smiled.
"The delivery is over."
Both men stared at her.
"How is Queen Gandhari?"
Bhishma asked quickly.
"She is safe,"
Satyavati replied with smile.
"She lost consciousness from exhaustion after the final child was born, but the physicians have confirmed that she is stable. And the children..."
She paused, allowing a small smile to appear.
"All of them are safe."
Karna’s face immediately brightened.
"All of them?"
Satyavati nodded her head.
"One hundred and one children."
For a moment, even Bhishma seemed stunned by the number.
"One hundred and one..." he repeated quietly.
"And there is something else," Satyavati added. "The first hundred are boys."
Karna blinked hearing her.
"And the last?"
"A girl."
A wide smile spread across Karna’s face.
"Devara has a daughter."
Bhishma laughed softly, the enormous tension that had weighed upon him finally beginning to disappear.
"After one hundred sons, the gods decided to surprise him with a daughter."
Karna chuckled.
"Then Devara truly has no idea what awaits him when he returns."
Satyavati smiled at the thought, but Bhishma suddenly remembered something.
"Devara."
His expression changed.
He looked toward the distant temple.
"He still hasn’t been told."
Karna’s smile faded for a moment as he remembered that Devara had left them specifically so he could perform penance until Gandhari and the children were safe.
"Then he should hear it from someone immediately."
Bhishma turned toward Karna.
"You go."
Karna nodded without hesitation.
"Tell him everything,"
Bhishma continued to speak with a smile as he looked at Karna.
"Tell him Gandhari is safe. Tell him every child is safe. And most importantly, tell him that he has become a father."
Karna’s grin returned.
"I will."
Without wasting another moment, Karna hurried toward the temple.
Meanwhile, the news had already begun spreading throughout the kingdom.
Citizens who had gathered around the temple after the earlier attack slowly realized that Karna, one of Devara’s most trusted Senapatis and closest companions, was approaching with an unusually bright expression.
The moment people recognized him, they immediately moved aside.
"Make way."
"It is Senapati Karna."
"He is going toward Maharaja Devara."
Karna walked through the gathering crowd, occasionally receiving joyful greetings from citizens who were already beginning to understand that something wonderful had happened.
The Naagas remained hidden among the trees, while the royal guards maintained their positions around the temple.
At last, Karna reached the temple entrance.
Inside, Devara remained seated before the sacred fire.
His body had not moved for hours.
His eyes were still closed.
His breathing remained slow and controlled as he continued his penance, his mind focused entirely upon one prayer.
Let Gandhari and the children be safe.
Karna stopped a short distance away.
He smiled and then he raised his voice.
"DEVARA!"
The sound echoed through the temple.
Devara’s eyebrows moved slightly, but he did not immediately open his eyes.
Karna laughed.
"DEVARA! You can stop your penance now!"
Devara slowly opened his eyes.
The moment he saw Karna’s face, he knew something had happened.
Karna was smiling.
Not the polite smile of a warrior.
Not the restrained smile he usually wore in court.
This was pure happiness.
Devara immediately stood.
"Gandhari?"
Karna stepped closer.
"She is safe."
Devara’s tense expression softened.
"The children?"
"Safe."
Devara released a breath he had unknowingly been holding for hours.
Karna’s grin widened.
"And you, my friend, are now a father."
Devara stared at him.
For a moment, he simply stood there, as though the words had failed to reach his mind.
"A... father?"
Karna laughed.
"Yes. A father."
Devara’s eyes widened.
For several seconds, Devara said nothing and then his face transformed completely.
The exhaustion, tension and fear that had remained with him throughout the penance disappeared, replaced by overwhelming relief and happiness.
He whispered the words as though trying to understand them.
Devara looked toward the temple shrine and closed his eyes for a moment.
"Thank you, Mahadev."
His voice trembled slightly.
Gandhari was safe.
His children were safe.
And somewhere inside the palace, one hundred and one newborn children had entered the world.
Devara turned toward Karna.
"I need to see them."
Together, the two men stepped out of the temple as the citizens surrounding it erupted into cheers, celebrating not only the safety of their king, but the arrival of the next generation of their royal family.
Karna’s announcement did not remain within the temple grounds.
His voice had carried far beyond the temple entrance, and the citizens gathered around the sacred grounds had heard every word.
"ONE HUNDRED SONS AND ONE PRINCESS!"
For a heartbeat, the entire crowd stood frozen.
Then the kingdom erupted.
A tremendous cheer rose from the streets surrounding the temple, spreading outward like a wave as people began celebrating the news that their king had been blessed with one hundred princes and a princess.
Men raised their hands toward the sky, women embraced one another with tears of happiness in their eyes, and children ran through the streets shouting the news to anyone who had not yet heard it.
"THE MAHARAJA HAS BECOME A FATHER!"
"ONE HUNDRED PRINCES!"
"AND A PRINCESS!"
"LONG LIVE THE ROYAL FAMILY!"
The news travelled through every street, market, residential quarter and military camp of the kingdom.
Merchants immediately began distributing sweets, refusing payment from citizens who came to share in the celebration.
Musicians brought out their instruments, drums began echoing through the streets, and people decorated their homes and shops with flowers, lamps and colorful cloth.
Even those who had been frightened by the earlier attack soon found themselves smiling as the kingdom’s attention shifted toward the joyous news from the palace.
At the royal palace, the celebrations became even more magnificent.
Servants hurried through the corridors carrying trays of sweets and flowers, while royal attendants prepared lamps and decorations throughout the palace grounds.
The news reached every member of the royal household, and wherever it was announced, the same reaction followed: astonishment at the number of children, followed by overwhelming happiness.
But the celebration did not remain confined to the palace.
Across the entire kingdom, temples began preparing special rituals.
Priests who had already been conducting yagas and poojas for Gandhari’s safety suddenly changed the nature of their prayers.
Sacred fires were fed with fresh offerings, clarified butter was poured into the flames, and Vedic chants echoed beneath temple roofs as priests offered prayers of gratitude for the safe arrival of the royal children.
At one temple, bells began ringing continuously as devotees gathered before the deity.
At another, priests prepared special offerings and placed flowers before the shrine while announcing the birth of the princes and princess.
In yet another temple, an elderly priest raised his hands toward the heavens and declared that the kingdom had entered a blessed moment.
The celebrations continued long into the day.
Everywhere, the same message was repeated.
One hundred princes had been born.
One princess had been born.
And all of them were safe.
The people who had watched Devara build his kingdom from the beginning now felt as though they had witnessed the birth of an entirely new generation.
These children were not merely members of the royal household in the eyes of the citizens.
They were the future generation of the kingdom, born into a land whose people already regarded their king as one who stood among them rather than above them.
At the temple, the sound of celebration eventually reached Devara himself.
He stood beside Karna, listening as the distant drums and temple bells echoed across the kingdom.
For a moment, Devara simply smiled.
He had spent hours sitting before the sacred fire, praying that Gandhari and the children would survive.
Now the entire kingdom was celebrating because his prayers had been answered.
Karna placed a hand upon his shoulder.
"Your kingdom has already started celebrating, my friend."
Devara looked toward the distant palace.
"Then I shouldn’t keep them waiting."
With that, the newly crowned father finally turned away from the temple, ready to return to Gandhari and meet his one hundred sons and his little daughter for the first time.
When Devara finally arrived at the royal palace, the entire atmosphere seemed different from the one he had left behind.
The corridors were overflowing with happiness, servants were moving everywhere carrying trays of sweets and fresh flowers, and the sound of distant drums and temple bells continued to echo through the palace grounds.
Yet Devara barely noticed any of it. His thoughts were fixed entirely upon Gandhari and the children.
He hurried toward Gandhari’s chamber, only to slow down as he reached the doorway.
Inside, Gandhari was peacefully asleep.
Her face, which had been twisted by exhaustion and pain only moments earlier, now looked remarkably calm.
Her breathing was steady, and the physicians had assured everyone that she was safe.
Satyavati sat nearby, keeping watch over her, while Bhudevi remained close enough to intervene if necessary.
Devara stood at the doorway for several seconds without saying anything.
He had imagined this moment countless times during his penance.
He had imagined seeing Gandhari awake, perhaps smiling at him, perhaps complaining about the endless ordeal she had endured.
Instead, he found her sleeping.
A small smile appeared on his face.
"Let her rest," he whispered.
Satyavati looked toward him and nodded.
"She has earned it."
