Chapter 188: Morning After
Liam woke to pale light and the weight of Jessica’s arm across his stomach.
For a moment he didn’t move. Her breathing was still deep and even against his side. The sheets were a wreck.
The air in the room still carried the thick scent of what they had done the night before. His ribs ached dully when he shifted, but the sharp edge of the pain had dulled overnight.
The cut above his eyebrow felt tight, closed over.Jessica stirred when he tried to ease out from under her.
Her eyes opened halfway, unfocused at first, then clearer as memory settled in. She didn’t pull away in embarrassment.
She simply looked at him for a long second, expression unreadable, before letting her arm slide off his waist.
"Morning," she said. Her voice was still rough.
"Morning."
She sat up slowly, wincing a little as she moved. The sheet slipped down to her waist.
Faint marks from his hands showed on her hips and the side of her breast. She noticed him looking and didn’t bother covering herself immediately.
A faint, dry awareness sat in her eyes not shame, just the quiet recognition of what they had done and how thoroughly it had left its evidence on her body.
"I’m going to be walking funny all day," she muttered.
"Good." A faint breath of laughter left her. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood, collecting her clothes from the floor with less urgency than she might have shown a week ago.
When she pulled her top on, she glanced back at him. "I’m not going to start acting like Renee," she said.
"I didn’t ask you to."
Jessica held his gaze for a moment longer, then nodded once. Soft. Still herself. Just... different.
The sharpness that used to define her hadn’t disappeared, but it had been tempered. Blunted by the night and by the fact that she had finally stopped holding the line.
She finished dressing and paused at the door, one hand on the frame. "I’ll see you downstairs."
Then she left.
Liam stayed in bed a little longer before getting up. He showered carefully, letting the hot water work against the lingering stiffness in his ribs and shoulders.
The mirror showed the expected damage fading bruises, the closed cut above his eye, split knuckles that were already healing faster than they should have.
By the time he pulled on clean clothes and stepped into the hallway, the villa was fully awake. The shift in the house was subtle, but present.
Renee was in the kitchen when he entered. She looked up from the coffee she was pouring, eyes flicking over him once in quiet assessment.
There was no jealousy in her expression. Only a kind of calm recognition, as if she had already expected this outcome and filed it away without friction.
"You’re up late," she said.
"Late night."
Her mouth curved slightly. She slid a second mug across the counter toward him without comment and went back to what she was doing.
The ease of it said more than words would have. Renee had always been the most adaptable of them claimed early, settled cleanly, and now watching the board expand without needing to contest it.
Liam took the coffee and drank, leaning against the counter. The kitchen smelled like roasted beans and the faint citrus cleaner someone had used earlier. Outside the window, the courtyard was still damp from the overnight rain.
Vanessa passed through the far end of the hall a minute later. She slowed when she saw him, eyes dropping for half a second before she corrected it.
The memory of the open doorway and the state she had found him in with Renee still sat between them. Now Jessica had been added to that knowledge.
Vanessa gave a short nod and continued on, but her shoulders were a fraction tighter than usual. Whatever calculation she was running, it had grown more complicated overnight.
Cole was the most obvious.
She stood near the entrance to the courtyard, tablet in hand, posture as straight as ever.
When Liam stepped outside, her gaze tracked him with the same controlled focus she always used except this time there was something sharper underneath it. Not hostility.
Awareness. She had seen too much already. Jessica’s softened demeanor this morning would not have escaped her. Cole’s eyes moved over him once, precise and unreadable, before she returned her attention to the tablet.
"You’re on rotation until noon," Liam said.
Cole nodded once. "Understood."
She didn’t ask questions. She never did. But the way her eyes lingered half a second longer than necessary said she was recalculating something.
Cole had always been the hardest to read among the newer women. Professional to the core. Controlled.
The fact that she had walked in on him with Renee and then watched Jessica soften overnight meant she was now holding more information than she had asked for.
Jack was in the courtyard, working through slow mobility drills with a staff. The morning light caught the faint sheen of sweat on his shoulders.
He glanced over when Liam approached, took in the fading bruises, and raised an eyebrow.
"You look less like a car accident today."
"Progress." Jack spun the staff once and rested it against his shoulder. "Jessica seemed different this morning."
Liam didn’t answer.
Jack studied him for a moment, then snorted under his breath. "Yeah. Thought so." He didn’t push further.
He simply went back to his drills, the corner of his mouth still tilted in quiet amusement. Jack had stopped pretending he didn’t notice the pattern in the house. He just chose not to make it his problem.
Liam left him there and walked the edge of the grounds once, letting the cool air clear the last of the night from his head.
The tree line was quiet. The perimeter cameras tracked nothing unusual. The villa felt stable in a way it hadn’t in weeks no external pressure sitting against the gates, no immediate threat demanding his attention before the coffee had even cooled.
The women were adjusting in their own ways.
Renee with calm acceptance.
Vanessa with quiet tension.
Cole with sharpened observation.
Jessica with a softness she was still deciding how to carry.
Veronica had passed him in the hall earlier with the same professional nod as always, but even she had glanced twice. The house was recalibrating. Pieces shifting into new positions around the latest claim.
His phone vibrated in his pocket.
Sandra. He answered on the second ring.
"Liam."
"What is it?"
"The industrial park side went quiet after you declined Charles. No more pressure. But I thought you should know someone else requested a full copy of our routing schedules yesterday.
Anonymous request. Professional enough that it almost looked legitimate."
Liam’s eyes narrowed slightly. He stopped walking, one hand resting against the low stone wall that bordered the outer path.
"Did you give it to them?"
"No. I buried it. But whoever it was knew exactly which channels to try. They didn’t leave much of a trail, but they knew what they were looking for."
"Send me what you have."
"Already did."The call ended.
Liam stood at the edge of the tree line, phone still in his hand, and looked back toward the house. Jessica’s claim had settled one thread.
The house was recalibrating around it. The internal board was quieter than it had been in weeks. But the outside world had not gone entirely still.
Someone was still watching.
Still testing the edges.
Still patient enough to try a clean, professional request instead of brute force.
He slipped the phone back into his pocket and started walking toward the villa. The morning air was cool against his face.
Behind him, Jack’s staff cut through another slow sequence. Ahead, the house waited with its shifting internal dynamics and its newly claimed pieces.
The board was quiet. But it was not empty.
And the next move was already waiting.
