Anton’s summoned ravens were the ones who informed him that several Remuth guards were approaching the warehouse where they had been held.

The guards—or policemen, or whatever they were called in Remuth—were being led by the raven Anton had sent with the letter informing Paul and Eric’s fathers about the kidnapping.

“Everyone! The guards are coming!” Anton loudly announced.

He pointed at a couple of the more courageous boys and told them to meet the guards at the warehouse gate.

Anton could see that the two boys still looked a little afraid, and he understood their fear. It would probably take time for all the former captives to recover from the trauma of being kidnapped by slavers.

He commanded a couple of his summoned dire wolves to accompany the two boys, which seemed to restore their courage.

The boys left to meet the guards, and by the time they returned with them, Anton asked the most responsible and mature-looking woman among the captives to handle the communication with the guards.

Anton dispelled all of his summons except for the spirit wolves that were accompanying the traumatized children.

Thankfully, the woman knew what to do and provided the guards with all the information they needed.

Anton knew, however, that he would still be interviewed by the authorities.

At the very least, the Remuth guards worked quickly. Within an hour, the former captives were being taken care of by people who knew how to handle situations like this.

An issue did arise, though.

Some of the children had grown extremely attached to his spirit wolves and were hugging the summons fiercely. When Anton finally dispelled the wolves at the healers’ request so that the children could begin adjusting without them, the children cried so hard that Anton felt as if he had killed their parents or something.

Thankfully, the children’s parents and relatives soon arrived. They all looked worried and relieved at the same time as they rushed to comfort the children.

By the time the sun began to set, most of the former captives’ relatives had arrived.

Anton found himself at the guard station, being interviewed by a Supreme Rank mage who held the position of captain among the guards.

He explained what had happened the previous day when he had temporarily performed as a minstrel in the plaza where entertainers gathered.

Anton told the captain that he had been approached by two men who wanted to recruit him as a bard for a wealthy noble.

Since Anton was a powerful wizard who was in Remuth hoping to join one of the magical organizations and was only singing like a minstrel in the plaza to amuse himself had declined their invitation.

He had also found the two men suspicious. They had kept staring at him as if he were a beautiful young woman, which had deeply disgusted him.

Anton told the Supreme Rank wizard that he had been severely tempted to destroy the two sleazy men. He had restrained himself because he didn’t want to compromise his chances of joining Traveler’s Haven, the magical organization he had chosen to join.

“Why didn’t you apply to join Traveler’s Haven immediately? Why were you still spending time idling around?” the captain asked.

“I have a couple of friends who are also planning to join a magical organization, and I’m waiting for them to complete the so-called rebirth process. We want to find out whether they’ll suffer any side effects that I wouldn’t be able to accept. Depending on the results, I might change their minds. They said they should be finished in another day or two,” Anton admitted.

Since Anton had already reached such a high rank in wizardry, the captain found it understandable that he would want to gather as much information as possible before joining Traveler’s Haven.

Thankfully, the captain didn’t focus too much on Anton’s desire to join the organization. Most of the interview concerned the slavers.

Anton had to describe how he defeated the slavers and even summoned some of his summons so he could demonstrate the spells he had used to eliminate the slavers’ thugs.

The captain made something of a blunder when he asked Anton whether he could sell him copies of the spellbooks that would allow him to summon the creatures Anton had used.

Anton simply stared at him.

The captain looked ashamed for a few seconds before moving on.

The captain, who was also a Supreme Rank wizard, informed Anton that there might be a reward for subduing the slavers.

Apparently, a couple of the slavers’ leaders were Archmage Rank wizards and held fairly high positions within the syndicate.

The captain admitted that the authorities could use those captured mages to track down more members of the slaver syndicate.

The captain did warn Anton that he might find himself on the receiving end of retaliation from the organization.

Anton simply shrugged.

“I’m a combat wizard, and I’m capable of defending myself. I’m not afraid of them. I’m one of those who fought the Undead Coalition in their home kingdom of Nizgeroth,” Anton said.

He also told the captain that he didn’t want any reward and asked him to distribute the funds among the other victims instead.

Anton explained that he had allowed himself to be captured because he was waiting for the results of his friends’ rebirth process and had nothing better to do. He had wanted to experience the seedy underbelly of Remuth for himself.

Anton saw the captain frown slightly at that comment.

He knew the captain would probably have protested that such incidents were rare in Remuth. However, the fact that Anton, who had only recently arrived in the city, had encountered a slaver operation meant that such activities still existed within the kingdom.

That was a shameful reality for the authorities of any kingdom.

Anton didn’t blame the captain or the guards. Such things would probably never disappear completely.

Cheesy as it might sound, wherever there was light, there would always be darkness.

After his interview with the guards, Anton met up with Paul and Eric’s fathers.

He was surprised to see that they had waited for him outside the guard station.

The look of concern on his friends’ fathers’ faces touched him.

“Are you all right?” Paul’s father asked.

Anton felt a little ashamed that he couldn’t even remember the names of Paul and Eric’s fathers.

“I’m fine,” he replied. “I’m a powerful Supreme Rank wizard, so I was never in any real danger.”

He offered to treat the two men to a nice restaurant, but they declined. They told him that they wanted to return to their families at the tavern where they were staying while waiting for Paul and Eric to complete their application.

Anton did tell the two men that they would receive rewards from the guards for their assistance in capturing the slavers.

The news clearly excited them.

Anton understood that Paul and Eric’s fathers didn’t want to receive charity from him, but this was different. The rewards would be given to them because of their assistance to the authorities.

By the time Anton reached his cottage beside one of the many parks in Remuth, it was already late.

After eating a hearty dinner, he felt sleepy. He hadn’t slept the previous night, after all.

When he lay down on his bed, Anton was so tired that he even forgot to set up his Pearl of the Ocean magic item.

He woke up at around ten in the morning the next day.

Anton felt lazy, so he decided to remain at the cottage and rest.

He spent the day watching movies and television shows. From time to time, he also checked the non-ladder multiplayer section of the Diablo II portion of his Diablo System.

Finally, when evening arrived, he saw that Paul and Eric had created a game.

When he entered the game, Paul and Eric looked happy.

They told him that they had completed their assignment and had successfully undergone the rebirth process.
