Outside in the courtyard, the housekeeper had moved all the potted plants onto the terrace to be watered by the rain. Their branches and leaves were a particularly vibrant green.

Jiangg Ning took a deep breath.

“Thank you, Wanqing. If it weren’t for your comfort, I really don’t know what I would have done. I feel much better now… Since this is fate, I can only accept it. You’re right. Life can’t always be planned out. I should try to be more at peace with things.”

“That’s the best way to think about it. Alright, we’re home now, so my job is done. I’ll leave the rest to your family.”

“Okay, I’ll get going then.”

“If you need anything, just call me anytime,” Gu Wanqing said with a gentle smile. Watching Jiangg Ning get out of the car, she then added with a helpless reminder, “You forgot your purse~”

“Oh, I forgot. I forgot.”

Jiangg Ning came back, a little embarrassed.

…

「In the main hall.」

It was a lively scene.

Jiangg Yao had returned from abroad and, as always, brought back tons of gifts, even for the housekeepers. They were now piled up in the living room as she passed them out.

Chen Yuan sat on the sofa, watching her chatter away nonstop, and a smile slowly formed on his lips.

‘The two sisters really do have different personalities.’

Ever since Yaoyao left, the whole house had been especially quiet. Now that she was back, for the past two or three hours, the living room had been filled with nonstop laughter and cheer.

“Mom, you have to try on this scarf! I spent ages picking it out for you in Paris. It suits your style perfectly… You’re not a young girl anymore, don’t you like this elegant and opulent style? Why won’t you even put it on? Don’t tell me you look down on the things I buy.”

“Why would I wear a scarf in the middle of summer? You silly girl, are you trying to make me die of heatstroke?” Jiangg Ruxue said, waving her hand dismissively.

“At least try it on.”

“I’m not trying it on.”

“Hmph, suit yourself.”

Before she even stepped into the living room, Jiangg Ning could hear Yaoyao’s voice. Normally, she would have walked in with a light, happy gait, but right now, Jiangg Ning felt her steps were heavy.

Her feelings were also incredibly complicated.

“Ningning, you’re back.”

The grave expression hadn’t yet left her face when Chen Yuan spotted her walking in through the main entrance.

“I’m… I’m back,” she said, forcing a smile.

“Sis! Sis, sis, sis, sis~ You didn’t even come pick me up today! I’ve been home for so long and you’re only just getting back. You’re way too focused on work. You have no idea how much I missed you.”

The moment she saw Jiangg Ning, Yaoyao came running over with quick, little steps.

Having not seen her for over a month, it wasn’t just Chen Yuan she had missed.

They had never been apart for that long since they were children.

When Jiangg Yao threw herself into her arms, the tight hug made Ningning freeze for a second. After she came to her senses, she gently stroked Yaoyao’s hair.

“You’ve lost weight.”

“Sis, you’re amazing! No one else noticed I lost weight since I got home, but you could tell at first glance. That’s my big sister for you.”

Jiangg Yao’s laugh, like the ringing of silver bells, echoed as her eyes curved into crescents.

Off to the side, Chen Yuan rubbed his nose. He couldn’t see where Jiangg Yao had gotten any thinner at all, but somehow Ningning had noticed it instantly.

The warmth brought by family could truly soothe one’s heart.

Feeling this atmosphere, Jiangg Ning’s mood also improved a little.

“Oh, right, Sis! I brought back this dessert just for you. Carrying it all the way back was exhausting! You have to try it. It’s not the super sweet kind, so it doesn’t have a lot of calories.”

Yaoyao bustled about like she was wound up, not stopping for a single moment.

She quickly brought the dessert over, insisting on feeding it to Jiangg Ning.

She lowered her gaze to look at the small cake, not wanting to refuse her sister’s kind gesture, and so she gently opened her mouth.

“Ahhh—”

But what no one expected was…

When Jiangg Ning smelled the sickeningly sweet scent of the cream, a wave of nausea suddenly rose from her stomach. She couldn’t hold it back and her whole body trembled.

She nearly threw up right then and there.

Jiangg Ning clapped a hand over her mouth, waved her other hand frantically, and bolted for the bathroom as if fleeing.

Everyone in the living room was dumbfounded.

Jiangg Yao, especially, had not anticipated this reaction from her sister. She stood there, frozen.

“Are you okay?” Chen Yuan quickly stood up and followed her to the bathroom.

He had noticed earlier that Ningning’s expression didn’t look right, but because of the lively atmosphere, he hadn’t said anything immediately.

Among everyone there, only Jiangg Ruxue had keenly noticed Jiangg Ning’s reaction when she was about to be sick.

Her eyes flickered, and she involuntarily clenched her fists.

“What’s wrong with Sis?”

“It’s nothing. Your sister has never liked sweets, even as a child. Come, Yaoyao, I suddenly feel like trying on that scarf you mentioned.”

A gentle smile suddenly spread across Jiangg Ruxue’s face.

…

Following Jiangg Ning all the way to the bathroom, Chen Yuan entered to see her leaning against the sink, her back to him. When he walked closer, he saw her face was etched with discomfort.

“Ningning, maybe we should go to the hospital? Did you throw up? Did you eat something bad?”

He patted Jiangg Ning’s back.

When he saw Jiangg Ning’s expression, Chen Yuan was truly taken aback.

Her eyes were shimmering with tears, as if she were about to cry.

“No… I have something to tell you.”

Her expression was exceptionally serious as she tilted her head up slightly to look Chen Yuan in the eye.

Perhaps because of the overly solemn look on her face, Chen Yuan’s heart started to pound nervously.

But right now, he was completely clueless about the situation.

“Go ahead and say it. I’m listening.”

“Never mind. Let’s go upstairs and talk in my room.”

This topic undoubtedly concerned both of their lives, and Jiangg Ning didn’t want to be too hasty. But even so, she still hadn’t figured out what she was going to say.
