Chapter 1413: The Cleansing

“This tribe is actually bigger than I thought it would be.”

That was Lin Fan’s first thought when he saw the tribe.

He had already expected it to be a bit primitive, but he could also see that there were a few things that were considered normal for the magic continent.

He knew that these were most likely the things that they had traded for with the adventurers that came to this place.

Other than that, the amount of space that this tribe took up was more than Lin Fan had been expecting. This size also gave Lin Fan a good estimate of the number of buildings in this tribe, which meant that he had a good idea of how many people were in this tribe.

It certainly wasn’t a small tribe based on that.

The one other thing that caught him by surprise was the fact that all of their houses were suspended high up in the trees.

It wasn’t as if he didn’t understand why they did this when thinking of what this place was, it was just that this wasn’t what he had been expecting to see.

After arriving in the village, there were many gazes filled with curiosity and wariness that were cast in his direction. Only Lin Fan ignored all of them as he followed the translator to the chief’s residence, which was also the biggest building in this entire village.

When he came in, he found that it wasn’t just the chief alone that was here.

There were several others that were sitting in this building as well and it seemed like all of them had an aura that was equal to the chief. But since this was their tribe, it made sense that the chief of this tribe was sitting in the seat of honour.

After Lin Fan came in, the chief of the tribe wasted no time in asking, “What is this outsider doing here?”

The translator was the one that quickly explained what the situation was while Lin Fan observed the rest of the people in this room.

He could easily tell that these people were the same as the chief sitting in the main seat.

“Does that mean that these are chiefs of their own tribes? It seems like there are far more people that I thought living here…”

Once the translator had finished explaining the situation, it was back to the chief to speak.

The chief didn’t say anything right away as he looked at Lin Fan as if he was sizing him up.

When this happened, Lin Fan just calmly looked right back into the eyes of the chief without a single trace of fear. He looked right at him and waited to see what he would say.

In the end, the chief said, “We can provide this information, but our people will not accept it that easily.” With a sigh, the chief continued, “The ones that are sitting in this room can tell that you’re not a normal person, but it isn’t the same for the rest of our tribes. So the only thing that we can do is prove this to them or things will be troublesome.”

The others that were sitting down all nodded in agreement to this.

Lin Fan didn’t say anything, but he could guess what they were referring to.

Simply put, they were thinking about their own positions.

There was only so much that these chiefs could decide on their own, so they had to do something that would prove it to everyone else.

“We must perform the Cleansing.”

All of the people that had been sitting there nodded in agreement to this.

It was as if they had already made a decision without consulting the one that this decision was about. It was almost as if they were just completely ignoring the fact that Lin Fan might have an opinion on this matter.

But Lin Fan knew that this was the easiest way to get these people to help him.

There was no telling what kind of things they were capable of, so there was no telling how they would act if he was to become aggressive. So in the end, it was best if he played along to see if they would work with him.

Though there was one question that Lin Fan had to ask.

“What is this Cleansing that you speak of?”

In his past life, the Cleansing would have sounded like some kind of cult ritual or some kind of event that might happen in a horror movie. In short, it sounded like the kind of thing that one usually wouldn’t want to involve themselves in.

The chief didn’t really seem to care about Lin Fan’s question as he casually said, “It’s a trial that our people undergo when we choose to undergo a new endeavor. In this case, it would be our cooperation with you.”

He did make it sound simple, but Lin Fan just didn’t really believe that it was that simple.

Only it didn’t seem like the chief or the others in this room were willing to explain anything to him. It seemed like the only thing that they had on their mind was how to hold this Cleansing that they spoke of.

In the end, it was the translator that showed Lin Fan out and brought him to a waiting room for his turn in the Cleansing.

But at the same time, he gave him an idea of what this Cleansing was.

Even though there was this fancy name associated with it, what the Cleansing actually was was nothing more than trial by combat. It pitted participants against each other as they proved themselves in front of everyone in combat.

“The name came from the fact that our warriors were cleansing themselves of the poison of their past and becoming the brave warriors of the future.”

It was a strange concept, but this was the concept that these people chose to believe in.

At the same time, Lin Fan knew exactly why they were doing this.

It was to prove his strength to everyone so that they could be assured that he would be able to handle the hydra. Or else if they sent him to the hydra and died to it, then that would mean provoking the hydra and causing a large problem for the people that lived here.

It was also why the chiefs needed this since it would prove that they weren’t making a mistake trusting Lin Fan with this matter.

Since they were putting a rush on this, it didn’t take long for all of the warriors to gather.

From the aura that they gave off, Lin Fan could tell that these were some of the strongest warriors that these tribes had to offer. However, it wasn’t as if he felt any fear towards them.

In fact, it was almost as if he was about to steal candy from a baby with how relaxed he was.

Once they were on the stage, Lin Fan didn’t make a single move himself.

Instead, he summoned Hayase and left everything to him.

From the look on Hayase’s face, it was clear that he didn’t want to bother with this. But in the end, Lin Fan also summoned Shiro who he held in his hand and petted on the head.

Shiro didn’t mind being summoned out if it was for something like this.

As for Hayase, it was different if Shiro was here to watch him.

If the girl that he liked was here, it was only natural that he would want to show off what kind of ability he had.

That was why it didn’t even take him a minute to deal with all of the warriors that were gathered around Lin Fan.

This was a group combat where everyone would be facing each other, but the way that the warriors surrounded Lin Fan made it clear that they were all teaming up against him.

Only that didn’t matter when they faced Hayase’s power.

With just a wave of his claw, there were water bubbles that formed around all of the warriors that were around him.

The warriors didn’t give up when they were caught in these bubbles, they did what they could to try and break out of these bubbles. It was just that they really couldn’t do anything to these bubbles at all.

The more that they struggled, the less confident they were in destroying these bubbles that caught them.

After all, all of their attacks just bounced off the water bubbles around them. Every blow that they used against the bubbles just disappeared as ripples on the surface of the bubble.

No matter how they tried to break the bubble, it didn’t seem like it was having any effect at all.

In the end, the only thing that they were doing was wasting more and more of their strength.

Some of the ones with less intelligence just continued hitting the bubbles until they completely ran out of strength. At that point, they couldn’t even stand up or hold the weapons that they had been wielding.

They really had become nothing more than rats in a trap.

“That’s enough.”

Seeing the last warrior drop his weapon, the chief declared the trial to be over.

There was no sound that was made after the chief declared this as all of the spectators just had strange and ugly looks on their faces.

But at least it seemed like they had been convinced of Lin Fan’s strength.

With this, it seemed like Lin Fan had found a guide to the hydra.
