One-Eyed Monster
Chapter 1438 - 1435: Water Spirit (Part 2)
The Spirit Book's words left Douglas and Amoon a little puzzled. They didn't quite understand why the Water Spirit was no longer a danger when crossing the river.
Water Spirits mostly dwell in the Vero Realm, they are the spirits of the water, different from the Tree Spirits. Water Spirits are peculiar by nature and rarely interact with humans. They seem to prefer living in their own world and are unwilling to have too much contact with humans.
However, humans have always been a curious species. The power of Water Spirits in the water incites some greedy individuals to continuously harass them, which causes the Water Spirits, who originally had little interaction with humans, to develop a kind of animosity towards them.
Water Spirits are not gentle. They will not come to an understanding with humans as the Tree Spirits do. They purely demonstrate their power, fiercely capsizing the ships of the Vero People, making those who once seemed high and mighty become exceedingly fragile. In the presence of Water Spirits, it all becomes effortless.
The battle between the Vero People and the Water Spirits lasted less than a day before they were completely defeated. This mysterious species has always maintained an enigmatic aura. To the Vero People, their existence is both a temptation and a danger.
Water Spirits are considered a dangerous species, and this notion spread from the mouths of the Vero People.
Ships passing through the region of the Water Spirits are invariably sunk, perforated, with no survivors...
Yet there are always brave individuals who continuously challenge the Water Spirits, forever dancing on that thin red line.
On the Yowein Continent, Water Spirits are perceived as mysterious, dangerous, and unfathomable.
So when the Spirit Book said that the Water Spirit was not a danger when crossing the river, they still showed a very incredulous expression.
Of course, except for Igor, whose understanding of Water Spirits was limited to what he had read in books.
"I was fortunate enough to encounter a Water Spirit once. They are captivating in form, but beautiful things often come with danger. At that time, our ship was nearly overturned by a Water Spirit. If it weren't for our captain being familiar with that area, I might have become a captive of the Water Spirits!" Amoon said, clearly using his own experience to refute the Spirit Book's assertion.
"I've never witnessed a Water Spirit, but I once toured the museum of Kote Brown in the Wensi Empire!" Douglas also said slowly. Of course, there have to be quotation marks around the word 'tour' because given his status, he would not have been invited to Kote Brown's museum in the Wensi Empire.
Kote Brown was the former chief secretary to Queen Wensi of the Wensi Empire, serving for several terms and having served Tree Spirits as well. He could be considered one of the witnesses to the entire history of the Wensi Empire, after all, this old guy has lived a long time. After his retirement, he has been collecting all sorts of strange things, and that museum is simply an exhibition of his personal collection.
"In that museum, I saw the wreckage of ships destroyed by Water Spirits. Even when shattered into pieces, the words left behind by intruders who perished on those pieces were still evident, which shows the depth of the Water Spirits' hatred for humanity."
Whether it was Douglas or Amoon, their understanding of Water Spirits was quite deep. Even though they haven't had much interaction with them, they both felt that Water Spirits were a dangerous existence, a naturally violent species.
"Yes, what you said represents humanity's view of Water Spirits—dangerous, violent, eccentric by nature, wicked, and so on." The Spirit Book got excited. It felt necessary to exert its features. The feature of a book is to provide more knowledge, and a book with its own thoughts aims to preach to others. This Spirit Book clearly desired to lecture.
"Your perception of Water Spirits is rooted in your own level, on the human level. You think in such-and-such a way, but is that way truly accurate? I think we need a nice, long think, or better yet, since you've seen so much, how about we engage in a fruitful discussion?"
Clearly, this Spirit Book already guided Igor and his group into its rhythm of dialogue.
Amoon, still a bit sober, hurriedly interrupted the Spirit Book's lengthy discourse: "Let's not do this; how about we focus back on the shortcut issue?"
"The matter of Water Spirits is as important as the shortcut issue, no need to be hasty." This time the Spirit Book was quite clever.
Helplessly, Igor and the others could only follow the Spirit Book's pace, which wasn't a bad thing. After all, this Spirit Book was telling them about Water Spirits, a mysterious species, and knowing more could only be beneficial to them.
"I think you should know that most Water Spirits live in the Vero Realm, but some have come to the borders of Kayne. Though they haven't been discovered in the Star River, they have been confirmed to frequent Han Lake, right?"
This interaction was quite savvy, drawing Igor and his group's emotions fully into this discussion. The Spirit Book seemed to know a lot about Water Spirits.
"The behavior of Water Spirits has always been odd; perhaps leaving the Vero Realm has some secret behind it." Amoon speculated.
"Where they choose to go is their freedom, but monopolizing the Water Realm to keep humans away seems a bit too ferocious!" Igor said, his understanding of Water Spirits still quite shallow.
"See, I told you your perspective has always stood from a human viewpoint, now it's exposed, isn't it? You never considered what the Water Spirits think."
"Uh..." Igor scratched his head, feeling his previous thoughts were indeed a bit narrow-minded.
"Many of you believe that Water Spirits are perilous, but how many of you have really interacted with them? Maybe you don't even know what a Water Spirit truly looks like. Among you, only Amoon has approached them, but not fully interacted with them, right?"
This statement from the Spirit Book left them with no way to refute. Indeed, their perception of Water Spirits lingered in the impressions others had.
And these others, it seems, were all filled with fear of Water Spirits...
"In books, I've seen Water Spirits..." Igor whispered, speaking truthfully, but felt lacking in confidence.
"Speaking of books, that's right up my alley. I dare say, any scholar or adventurer who mentions Water Spirits in their books, does so as if they are in an unknown state—this you can verify yourselves."
This remark by the Spirit Book brought some realization to Amoon and Douglas. It was now that they discovered, in fact, all evaluations concerning Water Spirits were based on hearsay. The authenticity of these legends is unverifiable. Any academic books and non-fiction books recording Water Spirits remain a realm of the unknown...
"Turns out, up to this point, we know absolutely nothing about Water Spirits!"
