Chapter 1427: Chapter 767: Haven’t You Made Enough Trouble?

Since they already acquired the defense map, there was naturally assistance from within the town. Additionally, the baron knew he couldn’t hold the town after losing on the frontal battlefield, so he deployed his elite forces without leaving much strength for defense.

It could almost be said that the gate opened on its own upon arrival. Reynard led the cavalry in, advancing deep into the town, spreading news of Hamlet’s victory while heading straight to control the baron.

Thus, when the infantry entered the town, they faced little resistance and took control. During this process, for most ordinary people, it was somewhat bewildering, and they didn’t even have time to react.

What? We just sent people over in the morning, and now by noon you’re saying it’s all lost?

...

In the manor, the baron dismissed most of his servants and sat alone forlornly in the hall. Although he hadn’t slept the entire night before, he couldn’t fall asleep now despite feeling exhausted—anxiety and fear intertwined within him, filling his heart with unease.

He desperately sought to know the outcome of the battle but simultaneously didn’t want to hear it, fearing he might learn something he didn’t wish to hear.

It was all like a tightening rope around his neck, slowly restricting his breath as it tightened.

However, in the real world, he had no choice. Soon he heard the commotion outside which startled him, and at that moment, his confidant walked in, prompting him to inquire hurriedly.

"How is it? Did we win?"

Seeing the baron in such a state, the confidant’s expression turned somewhat odd, and he could only speak truthfully.

"I don’t know how our army is doing, but Hamlet’s army has certainly broken in."

Upon hearing these words, the baron surprisingly showed no fear. He hadn’t lost his mind yet; the sounds from outside clearly weren’t shouts of joy, plus, if it was good news, the person’s reaction wouldn’t be like this upon entering.

Clearly, he knew he couldn’t defeat Hamlet, merely hoping for a miracle.

Now, it was like a weight had been lifted off his heart, and he let out a sigh of relief instead.

But that didn’t mean he was ready to admit defeat and await death; on the contrary, he instantly revealed a ruthless streak.

"Before they fully gain control, you go arrange to set the place on fire. Burn everything down! Nothing should be left to those commoners!"

"What? Me?" The person looked at the baron in alarm, attempting to persuade him, "Sir, if the fire spreads, the people in the town..."

"What’s there to be afraid of? You’ll come with me when it’s done; I’ve already arranged for someone outside the town to help us escape."

The baron wasn’t unaware of the dryness during autumn and winter; a fire once started would be unstoppable, especially considering most of the town’s buildings were wooden.

Setting fires everywhere; many would die from it...

Yet the baron didn’t care. He preferred to destroy everything rather than let Hamlet have it.

In his eyes, everything was his noble lordship’s property, driven by the mindset of "If I can’t have it, I’ll destroy it so you can’t have it."

As for himself, he didn’t plan on being buried with the town because the manor was built with a secret passage leading outside the town—a testament to noble prudence.

Besides preparing for war, he had also moved family assets elsewhere these past days, which is why his most trusted steward and son were not around, they were handling this task.

With the family’s accumulated wealth, even if he lost his territory, he could still live comfortably once he escaped.

As for the current person, he’d placate him for now and deal with him afterward.

Though he had arranged the arsonists, they operated with a layer of gloves, so he needed this person to initiate the act.

No matter what, he couldn’t let it be known that he arranged the arson, after all, he still laid claim to this place and might return in the future; the family reputation mustn’t be tarnished.

He planned to attribute the deeds to Hamlet, spreading rumors of them coming in to massacre and pillage, weakening their reputation as a tactic.

Then seek other nobles to ally and attack Hamlet, thinking it wouldn’t be too far-fetched...

"Why aren’t you going!"

The baron seemed to have shed off the failure and assumed a commanding posture, urging, perhaps even coercing.

Under usual circumstances, such a person would be forced to carry out these orders, since the baron was the absolute ruler here, his commands unquestionable.

But now, everyone knew Hamlet had broken in, the baron had lost his power base.

Instead of leaving, the person smirked with a hint of contempt, looking at the baron, even showing a trace of pity in his gaze.

This attitude stung the already defeated baron like a sharp dagger to his soul.

Challenging his authority, something the territory’s ruler couldn’t accept—he erupted in furious curses, raising his hand for a slap.

"You worthless!"

"Slap!"

The baron struck quickly; the person couldn’t react and took the hit squarely.

In the past, whether wrong or not, he’d plead for the baron’s forgiveness. But this time, after the hit, the person momentarily froze, then kicked the baron back while yelling curses, venting his inner dissatisfaction.

"The Hamlet army has already entered the town, listen to the sounds outside? Do you still think you’re a baron?

Being beaten to the gates in four days, thinking arson is your counter, only daring to vent at me, why don’t you dare go out to fight?

You’re a complete failure! A pathetic fool! A cowardly coward..."

The baron remained stable despite being kicked, only staggering slightly before regaining his footing.
