Raising Yanderes to save the world

Chapter 292: Ch 291: New job?

  • Next Chapter

The department head welcomed Kael into his office with a smile, but Kael’s eyes immediately went to the person sitting beside him.

That head of hair looked...familiar. And so did that face.

’No way! Why does that person look so much like Leon? That has to be a mistake...’

The department head’s smile did not disappear even after Kael shook his hand, but there was something strange about the way he was looking at him that made Kael feel like he was being examined rather than welcomed into a new workplace.

"I suppose you have a lot of questions."

The man said as he gestured toward the chair in front of his desk, and Kael reluctantly sat down while keeping his eyes on the man in front of him.

"I have several, actually. Starting with why everyone here seems to know who I am when I have never worked here before."

Kael replied honestly, and the department head let out a small laugh before sitting down as well.

"That is understandable. After all, your situation is rather unique, and we have been following your case for quite some time."

"My case?"

Kael repeated those words with a frown, and the man immediately realized that he had said too much.

"Well, not your medical case exactly. More like your professional history. You were considered one of the most promising young doctors in your field before your accident, and several people here were quite interested in your work."

Kael narrowed his eyes at him.

"That does not explain why you hired me after a two-year absence, especially when I have no recent experience and have forgotten half the things I used to do."

The department head smiled again, but this time there was something almost apologetic about it.

"You have not forgotten as much as you think you have."

Those words immediately made Kael uncomfortable.

"What exactly does that mean?"

"It means that your skills are still there. We simply want to give you an opportunity to prove it to yourself."

The answer sounded reasonable enough, but Kael had spent enough time dealing with people to know when someone was avoiding a question.

Still, he decided not to push the matter for now.

"So what exactly is my job?"

The department head handed him a folder that had been sitting on the desk, and Kael opened it to find a surprisingly simple description of his duties.

He would be working as a consultant for the company’s medical division, helping with employee wellness programs, psychological assessments, and occasionally advising on cases that required someone with his particular expertise.

It was not the kind of position that would require him to jump straight back into a hospital, which was probably why the company had offered it to him despite his absence.

"This is...actually pretty reasonable."

Kael admitted as he flipped through the pages.

"I told you that there was nothing strange about the position."

The department head replied with a smile, but Kael still did not trust him completely.

"There is still one thing bothering me."

"What is that?"

"Why me?"

The man became silent for a few seconds before leaning back in his chair.

"Because we believe you are exactly the kind of person we need."

"That sounds like something people say when they do not want to give the real answer."

Kael replied bluntly, causing the department head to laugh.

"You really have not changed."

Kael froze at those words spoken by someone with Leon’s face.

"What did you say?"

The department head immediately cleared his throat and looked away.

"Please don’t be so awkward. This person here will be your supervisor from here on. Make sure you follow him around and learn your work well."

Kael stared at him for a few seconds before deciding to let it go.

There was no point in obsessing over every strange word when he had only just returned to society, and if this company truly had some hidden agenda, then he would find out eventually.

For now, he needed the money.

"Fine. I will do my best."

Kael closed the folder and stood up, but before he could leave, the department head called out to him.

"One more thing, Mr. Kael."

Kael turned around.

"I do hope you stay with us for a long time. For some reason, everyone we hire keeps quitting."

The main department head’s smile was ambiguous as Kael followed the person with Leon’s face outside.

Kael felt awkward about saying anything, so he kept his mouth shut. But the other person spoke up soon enough.

"You are a doctor? Have you always been a doctor? Or did you have another job before this?"

This question was not surprising. In today’s world, was there even a way to survive if you did not work two or three jobs during your studies?

Kael, especially, was a poor student because he was an orphan. So he had worked so many jobs that he could not even count.

Still, was this Leon look-alike looking for something specific?

"I have done a lot of jobs. I believe I have been a magician once upon a time. Would you like to see a magic trick?"

Kael joked around, but his supervisor gave him a weird look before nodding.

"Sure, show me a trick."

"I am afraid I don’t have my tools. How about I show it to you next time?"

Of course, Kael did not know any magic tricks that could be performed without magic. And since he did not have magic, he could not perform anything.

And this made the mood even more awkward.

Kael had never believed his social skills to be poor, but perhaps it was his wishful thinking that made him feel this way.

His supervisor just sighed and took him back to the busy office where he was going to work.

"This is the medical room. Make a note of anything that might be missing, and we will get it for you. If you feel like you need anything, do let us know."

With those words said, the Leon look-alike left the room, and Kael let out the breath he did not even know he was holding back.

"This situation is turning more and more weird by the second. Did something go wrong when I cast the world magic? Well, it should not have, but it is possible since it was my first time..."

Kael complained, but there was no one here to answer him.

Since there was not much for Kael to do other than be on his phone, he started to organize the shelves for the things he was missing. He opened the first cabinet, but the door seemed like it was locked.

"How weird. Maybe I should get someone to bring me the key to this cabinet. I should look for my supervisor...but I never asked for his name."

Kael sighed, intending to find his supervisor by face alone. But he only made it so far before he felt something happening behind him. There was a strange squeaking noise, and then he watched as the cabinet he had been trying to open fell down.

He was barely out of its range, so he survived the impact. But the loud noise caused everyone to rush toward him and forced the door open.

"What happened here? Are you alright? And the cabinet? How did it fall down? It was supposed to be hammered to the wall."

The nails were still sticking out from the back of the cabinet, and the holes in the wall were evident.

No normal human should have been able to pull this cabinet and make it fall.

As a result, they all turned to look at Kael to see what he had to say. But Kael could only shake his head in shock over what he had just evaded.

"I have no idea what happened. The cabinet door was locked, so I was coming to get the key when it fell. The security cameras should be able to verify my words."

Kael pointed to the camera in the corner of the room, and the office workers followed him to the security footage.

And it showed exactly what Kael had said.

He stepped back toward the door, and the cabinet fell out of nowhere.

"Do you think it’s a ghost?"

Someone asked in a scared voice while the other sighed.

"It must be the same ghost, scaring the people trying to take over the medical wing. Sir, I would advise you to run away as soon as you can. As you can see, this position is cursed."

Kael was about to agree when he noticed that the Leon look-alike was glaring at him...no, not at him but at the footage. But something about it seemed to be telling Kael that it was fine for him to be here.

So, despite his confusion, Kael decided that it would be fine to try and stick around for a little longer. At least just enough to the point where he had some savings built up for his future.
