Role Stealer: The Script Executioner
Chapter 54: The First Gear
The air near Processing Plant One was thick enough to chew. It was a mixture of vaporized mana, rusted iron dust, and something that smelled like old, copper-heavy blood. The factory itself was a mountain of jagged scrap, a sprawling complex of chimneys that spat black fire into the iron sky. Huge conveyor belts, carrying the mangled remains of failed Tower experiments, groaned as they moved into the glowing red maw of the main furnace.
"Jax, report," Kai whispered.
He was crouched behind a pile of discarded mechanical limbs, his white hair tucked under his hood, the obsidian mask reflecting the flickering flames of the factory. Behind him, Kael and Sarah were checking their gear. They had replaced their old Gold-Rank equipment with High-Rank items stolen from the Ivory Citadel’s armory, but even with the new gear, they looked small against the scale of the industrial nightmare.
Jax slid out of the shadows, his face pale. "It’s worse than the streets, Kai. The perimeter is guarded by ’Sentinels’—mechanical eyes that can see through invisibility. And there’s a squad of those white-armored guys... the Cleaners. They’re standing at the main cooling pipe. They aren’t even moving. It’s like they’re statues."
"They aren’t statues, Jax," Kai said, his eyes narrowing. "They’re waiting for a signal. They know I bypassed the gate. They just don’t know where I am yet."
"So, what’s the plan?" Kael asked, gripping the hilt of his new obsidian-edged broadsword. "We can’t just walk in there. Those Cleaners... I can feel their pressure from here. They’re at least Level 150."
Kai looked at the massive cooling pipe—a translucent tube filled with glowing blue liquid that ran along the side of the factory. "We don’t need to fight them all. We just need to break the cycle. That cooling pipe feeds the main furnace. If it bursts, the mana pressure will back up into the core. The whole plant will turn into a bomb."
"And the Cleaners?" Sarah asked, her hand tightening around her staff.
"I’ll handle the Cleaners," Kai said. "You three focus on the pipe. Use the explosive scrolls we took from the Citadel. Once the alarm goes off, run for the maintenance hatch at the back. Don’t wait for me."
"Kai, you can’t be serious," Sarah hissed. "There are six of them! They’re Corporate Assets!"
"And I’m the one who wrote their combat sub-routines," Kai thought, but he didn’t say it. Instead, he just looked at her, his eyes cold behind the mask. "Trust me. Or stay here and watch the world burn. Move."
They moved.
Jax led the way, his movements a blur as he bypassed the Sentinel eyes. Kael and Sarah followed, staying low in the shadows of the scrap piles. Kai stayed behind for a moment, watching them reach the base of the cooling pipe.
Then, he stepped out into the open.
He didn’t hide. He didn’t sneak. He walked right down the center of the main road, his boots clicking rhythmically on the metal floor.
The Sentinel eyes instantly turned toward him, their red beams locking onto his chest. A high-pitched alarm wailed through the factory, a sound like a thousand dying birds.
The six Cleaners at the cooling pipe snapped into motion. They didn’t shout; they didn’t even speak. They moved in perfect unison, their white armor reflecting the red glow of the furnace. They drew long, vibrating monomolecular blades that hummed with a lethal frequency.
"Asset ’Glitch’ identified," the lead Cleaner said, his voice a flat, synthetic monotone. "Initiating Deletion Protocol. Surrender is not an option."
"Good," Kai said, his voice low and dangerous. "I wasn’t planning on giving you one."
The first Cleaner moved. He was fast—faster than anything Kai had faced in the Tower so far. He was a blur of white and silver, his blade aimed at Kai’s neck in a perfect, horizontal arc.
Kai didn’t draw a weapon. He didn’t even raise his hands. He simply tilted his head back, the blade whistling past his mask by a fraction of a millimeter. Before the Cleaner could recover, Kai stepped into his guard and drove his elbow into the man’s chest plate.
*CRACK.*
The reinforced armor shattered. The Cleaner was sent skidding back across the metal floor, sparks flying from his damaged suit.
The other five Cleaners didn’t hesitate. They attacked from all sides, their blades weaving a web of death around Kai. It was a coordinated strike, a masterpiece of combat efficiency.
But to Kai, it was like watching a movie in slow motion. He knew exactly where every blade was going before the Cleaners even moved their muscles. He danced through the strikes, his movements fluid and unnatural. He wasn’t just dodging; he was *flowing* around them, his white hair trailing like a ghost’s shroud.
"Your logic is flawed," Kai whispered, catching a Cleaner’s wrist and snapping it with a sickening pop. "You’re fighting a man. You should be fighting the reality you’re standing on."
He grabbed a second Cleaner by the helmet and slammed him into a third, the impact sounding like a car crash.
Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the factory.
A pillar of blue fire erupted from the cooling pipe. Kael and Sarah had succeeded. The liquid mana was spraying everywhere, turning the metal floor into a freezing, electrified hazard. The factory began to groan, the sound of grinding gears turning into a violent, metallic scream.
"The pipe is down!" Jax’s voice echoed through the chaos. "Kai, get out of there!"
The lead Cleaner, his armor scorched and cracked, stood up. His eyes, visible through his visor, were filled with a cold, artificial fury. "Target has caused catastrophic infrastructure damage. Authorizing Overclock Mode."
The Cleaners’ armor began to glow with a blinding, white light. Their speed doubled. Their blades began to vibrate so fast they became invisible.
"Oh? You’re finally pushing the hardware?" Kai said, a dark smile touching his lips behind the mask. "Then I suppose I should stop holding back."
He reached out his hand toward the floor. The shadows beneath the scrap piles began to rise, swirling around his feet like a living ocean.
"Void Mantle: Initialize," Kai whispered.
The shadows surged upward, wrapping around his body and forming a long, tattered cloak of pure darkness. His eyes flared with an abyssal light, and the pressure he exerted was so intense that the Cleaners actually faltered, their Overclocked systems stuttering in the presence of something they couldn’t calculate.
Kai disappeared.
He didn’t run. He simply ceased to be in one place and appeared in another.
*Slash. Slash. Slash.*
In three heartbeats, the remaining Cleaners were on the ground. Their armor wasn’t just broken; it was shredded, as if they had been attacked by a thousand invisible claws. They weren’t dead—Kai wanted them to witness the end—but they were completely neutralized.
The factory was tearing itself apart. The main furnace was glowing a brilliant, unstable white. Molten metal was pouring from the ceiling, and the iron sky was beginning to buckle.
"Kai! The back hatch! Now!" Kael shouted from the far end of the clearing.
Kai looked at the lead Cleaner, who was struggling to crawl away.
"Tell your superiors," Kai said, his voice echoing over the roar of the exploding plant. "Tell them the audit has begun. And Processing Plant One is just the first gear I’m going to break."
He turned and ran, his shadow-mantle trailing behind him as he dove through the maintenance hatch just as the entire factory erupted in a final, blinding explosion.

Kai landed in the dark tunnel, the heat of the explosion still hot on his back. He stood up and looked at his team. They were covered in soot, breathing hard, and staring at him with a new kind of terror.
"One down," Kai said, his voice steady. "Two to go."
