Chapter 1151: Chapter 1139

The days flowed by like running water.

According to the established plan, the survivors split into two groups each day, with one group busy building the city walls and the other repairing houses.

This was quite a tedious and tiring task, but for the survivors at the base, it was something they enjoyed.

It is no surprise since, in the apocalypse, the one thing people have in abundance is time.

The once bored people no longer had to toil from dawn till dusk for a living, and the dreams of "sleeping until waking naturally, counting money until cramping fingers" had been realized.

But cruelly, now that all is realized, no one feels happy about it.

Thus, the idle people began to miss those exhausting days between the same three points of routine.

This could very well be what they call the fickleness of mankind.

Many things aren’t truly appreciated until they are lost and regrettably missed.

As they say, what’s unattainable is often deemed the best.

Life is like that too, working from nine to five, toiling for everyday necessities might be tough and exhausting, but it is genuine, allowing you to genuinely feel alive.

Yet in the apocalypse, without the pressure of work or the burdens of study, no one feels delighted.

Take the current case of the survivor team members: Is building the city walls and repairing houses tiring? Of course! Is it hard? Certainly!

But everyone involved does so with a smile. Why?

Because in doing so, you feel a sense of fulfillment. You find that you finally have a goal you can realize.

This is extremely important to flesh-and-blood humans; living requires a goal, or you’ll be engulfed by a void, descending into despair, becoming a "walking corpse" merely existing.

The extensive construction at the survivors’ base has undoubtedly mobilized all the survivors’ enthusiasm.

It gave everyone a long-term goal to strive for.

This goal is very clear; everyone knows what they’re doing and why.

Those who have not experienced the apocalypse will never understand that "dreams and goals" can sometimes be a luxury.

In the apocalypse, not everyone gets to touch such things.

After all, the primary task of survivors is survival.

And in the apocalypse, even just surviving is enough to torment most people.

The survivor team is no exception; getting to where they are today was a prolonged process, from initial confusion to battling for survival, eventually finding this precious place where discussions of development, construction, and aspirations could happen.

All of this didn’t come easy, obtained through the blood of many comrades.

It is through such experiences that the survivors cherish the present even more.

They understand that their lives aren’t just their own, but carry the hopes and beliefs of their fallen companions.

They must live strongly for those who have passed.

So regardless of the future dangers or calamities, they must overcome them, persisting until humanity’s victorious counterattack day.

The men were busy, and the women did not idle either.

With the New Year approaching, Wei Yang, entrusted with a great responsibility, and her two younger sisters began preparing for the New Year.

This was the first New Year celebrated at the base, and Wei Yang wished to make it grand.

Although they’re not blood-related direct family, their life-and-death shared fate transcended bloodlines.

In making arrangements, Wei Yang intentionally or unintentionally involved He Jing and Ya Li.

Perhaps it was the festive atmosphere, but the two showed marked improvement compared to the past.

Especially Ya Li, whose once dull expression, akin to "someone in mourning," had begun showing vitality.

This was undoubtedly a welcome change; Wei Yang dearly hoped the two could soon walk out of their shadows and return to normal.

Old Zhao kept his word, spreading the festive news and urging everyone to prepare performances for New Year’s Eve.

For his daughter, Old Zhao even had a one-on-one discussion with Wang Qiang.

But the result... wasn’t particularly satisfactory; Wang Qiang didn’t give any definite answer, merely saying, "Oh, got it."

Old Zhao was helpless about this; however, setting aside his daughter’s requests, Old Zhao genuinely hoped Wang Qiang could use this festive time to unwind and vent his frustrations.

After all, with the New Year and a new atmosphere, no matter how Yang Xue hurt you, that was in the past; people must look forward.

Indeed! People must look forward, and so must the base’s development.

But building walls isn’t easy; putting together a haphazard wall wouldn’t be difficult, but if you approached it like some constructions, aiming to hastily make one in a few days, when finished, it might collapse by itself without even needing the zombies to push.

That would be deadly. Old Zhao, like the Li Family brothers, was absolutely meticulous regarding practical matters. Usually humble and elegant, he occasionally joked around.

But on the construction site, he was described as an iron-faced Judge by Wen Quanxin.

Wen Quanxin himself wasn’t exempt from receiving pointed criticisms for operational oversights from Old Zhao.

But the good thing about the survivor team was that no one holds grudges. Regardless of the issue, it was openly addressed, and once done, they moved forward. Everyone knew Old Zhao’s outbursts were for the base’s safety, an unavoidable responsibility.

So, nobody confronted him or abandoned their work because of it!

They were united, diligently contributing to their homestead.

Compared to building the city walls, house repairs progressed much faster.

Following Old Xu’s directions, Old Zhao selected four houses as key renovation projects.

He not only reinforced the roofing but also repaired damaged walls as needed.

Carpenter Yue Guishan utilized logs transported from the mountains to create many pieces of furniture.

Then, using paint previously collected, he painted each one.

Surprisingly, through their efforts, these once dilapidated and shabby houses became exquisitely decorated apartments.

Though not particularly eye-catching from the outside, they were well-equipped inside.

Especially the windows; previously, they were covered with fabric and adhesive tape, but now they boasted neatly cut glass, reinforced with thumb-thick iron bars.

Moreover, to prevent zombie attacks, all potential entry points were reinforced with thick iron plates.

Thus, in case of an attack, even if trapped inside, the people could rely on the sturdy walls and iron plates to hold out for some time.
