Chapter 229: Knowing One’s Place
Chapter 229: Chapter 229: Knowing One’s Place
By the time the government officers finally squeezed their way to the front of the crowd, they were already too late. Every pair of rain boots on Hua Buwan’s stall had sold out.
The lucky customers who managed to buy a pair left completely satisfied, eager to head home and share their joy with their families. They couldn’t wait to have their loved ones try on the miraculous boots and wade through the puddles. Meanwhile, those who had missed out refused to leave. They stayed rooted to the spot, gazing longingly at the remaining items on the stall, waiting for Hua Buwan to introduce them.
Standing before her stall, Hua Buwan wore a bright smile as she introduced the rubber gloves and soap to the crowd. She held up a pair of rubber gloves, demonstrating their flexibility and durability. "These gloves will protect your hands," she explained. "Whether you’re doing chores around the house or engaging in hard labor, they will keep your hands perfectly safe."
Curiosity piqued, the locals stared at the gloves and eagerly reached out to touch them.
Next, Hua Buwan picked up a bar of soap. "This is soap, used for cleaning both your body and your clothes. It has excellent stain-removing power and is incredibly convenient to use."
She even provided a live demonstration of how to wash hands with it. Seeing the rich, thick lather the soap produced, the crowd was fascinated by the sheer novelty of it. She went on to introduce the various scents available, opening the packages so everyone could pass them around and take a sniff.
By this time, the government officers had stepped up to the stall. Seeing the bustling crowd, they realized it was just a lively sale of novel goods. The vendors looked like honest, law-abiding locals, and three of them were frail women. There was clearly nothing to worry about.
Relaxing their grips on their swords, the officers curiously leaned in to listen to Hua Buwan’s sales pitch. Before long, they were completely won over and dug into their own pockets to buy gloves and soap. Even if they didn’t use the items themselves, someone in their households certainly would. They would definitely come in handy.
Hua Buwan’s introduction thoroughly captured the crowd’s interest, prompting a flurry of questions about the prices. She answered them all with endless patience, explaining the immense practicality and value of the items. Swayed by her pitch, the locals eagerly purchased the rubber gloves and soap before leaving the stall highly satisfied.
Soon, only the two government officers remained standing there.
Just then, Ling Qianjun and Ling Qianfan returned to the group. Seeing the officers, Xu Panqing and Ling Yunge stared at them in fear.
Hua Buwan, however, knew exactly how to handle the situation. Taking out some coins, she walked up with a beaming smile. "Officers, this is our stall fee. There were so many people earlier that we simply didn’t have a free hand to pay it. Please forgive the delay. This is our first time setting up a stall in town, so we hope you can look after us in the future. Please take this extra bit as tea money for your hard work."
Hearing Hua Buwan’s words, smiles spread across the two officers’ faces.
They thought to themselves, "She really knows how things work around here."
One of the officers waved a hand and said, "It’s a trivial matter. Just keep your noses clean and run your stall properly. We patrol this entire street, and nothing major usually happens around here. You can set up your stall with peace of mind."
"Indeed," the other officer chimed in. "As long as you abide by the law, you won’t have any trouble."
Their reassurances put Hua Buwan completely at ease. The officers clearly meant they would look out for them. As long as they didn’t stir up any trouble, they could safely run their stall here from now on.
"Understood! Thank you, officers," Hua Buwan said. She led the Ling family in expressing their gratitude before watching the two men walk away.
