Chapter 49: The Battlefield of a Hundred Masters
The battlefield continued changing.
What had once been a simple stone arena was now an enormous landscape.
Mountains rose from the ground, their peaks disappearing into a dark blue sky. A forest stretched across the eastern side, while a wide river divided the western half of the battlefield. Floating platforms hovered above the ground, connected by narrow bridges of condensed mana.
Subin stood at the center.
He slowly looked around.
The transformation was not cosmetic.
Every part of the new battlefield had a purpose.
The mountains created elevation.
The forest obstructed vision.
The river restricted movement.
The floating platforms created multiple levels.
And scattered throughout the terrain were weapons.
Swords.
Spears.
Axes.
Bows.
Hammers.
Shields.
Chains.
Staffs.
Halberds.
Dozens of different weapons.
The system appeared before Subin.
[Weapon Battlefield — Stage Two]
[Progress: 21/100]
[Remaining Weapon Masters: 79]
[New Trial Condition Activated.]
[Battlefield Environment: Dynamic.]
[Objective: Defeat the remaining Weapon Masters while adapting to changing terrain.]
Subin read the information quietly.
"So the battlefield itself is now part of the trial."
A faint smile appeared on his face.
That made things more interesting.
He had already learned that every weapon controlled a certain kind of space.
Now the environment itself would become another weapon.
A horn sounded.
From the forest, several figures emerged.
Five masters.
All Level 54.
A swordsman.
A spear master.
A bow master.
A halberd wielder.
And a shield warrior.
They didn't attack immediately.
Instead, they spread across the battlefield.
Subin watched their positioning.
The swordsman moved toward the center.
The shield warrior took the front.
The spear master positioned himself behind the shield.
The archer climbed a rocky slope.
The halberd wielder moved toward the river.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
They were establishing control before the battle even began.
He stepped forward.
The archer fired.
Subin moved sideways.
The arrow struck the ground.
The spear master charged behind the shield.
Subin advanced.
The shield slammed forward.
He stepped around it.
The spear thrust.
Subin deflected it with Simple Edge.
The halberd swept toward his legs.
Subin jumped.
The swordsman attacked while he was airborne.
Subin twisted in midair and blocked.
The impact sent him toward the river.
He landed on the riverbank.
The five masters had already positioned themselves again.
Subin smiled.
"You're not trying to defeat me immediately."
He understood their strategy.
They were gradually restricting his available space.
The river was behind him.
The shield controlled the front.
The spear controlled the middle distance.
The halberd controlled the lower angles.
The archer controlled the upper field.
And the swordsman was waiting for him to make a mistake.
Subin stepped toward the river.
The shield master advanced.
Subin turned.
The halberd attacked.
He moved backward.
The spear followed.
An arrow descended.
Subin cut it apart.
The swordsman attacked.
Simple Edge met the blade.
Clang!
Subin's feet touched the edge of the river.
He had been pushed exactly where they wanted him.
The shield warrior charged.
Subin suddenly stepped into the river.
Water splashed around his ankles.
The shield master followed.
Subin's eyes sharpened.
The shield warrior's movement slowed slightly.
The river was affecting its footing.
Subin stepped sideways.
The shield turned.
The spear thrust.
Subin moved.
The spear struck the shield from behind.
For the first time, the formation broke.
Subin used Fang Step.
He crossed the distance instantly.
Simple Edge flashed.
The spear master disappeared.
[Weapon Master 22/100 defeated.]
The remaining four immediately adapted.
The archer changed position.
The halberd master entered the river.
The shield warrior moved toward higher ground.
The swordsman stayed in front of Subin.
Subin looked at the swordsman.
Its stance was different from the previous sword master.
More aggressive.
Less defensive.
Its sword was held low.
Subin recognized the posture.
"Counterattacking style."
The swordsman moved.
A horizontal slash came toward Subin's waist.
Subin blocked.
The sword suddenly reversed.
A thrust.
Subin tilted his body.
The blade passed.
A second slash.
Subin stepped backward.
The swordsman followed.
Its attacks became faster.
Subin didn't counter immediately.
He observed.
The swordsman was waiting for him to create an opening.
Every defensive movement from Subin became an opportunity for the projection.
Subin understood the principle.
A counterattacker didn't need to control the entire battlefield.
It only needed the opponent to initiate.
Subin suddenly stopped attacking.
The swordsman waited.
Neither moved.
Seconds passed.
The archer fired.
Subin cut the arrow.
The swordsman attacked immediately.
Subin didn't retreat.
He stepped forward.
The swordsman's counterattack was designed around the assumption that Subin would move backward.
Subin broke the assumption.
Simple Edge moved.
The swordsman's blade was redirected.
Subin's sword touched its chest.
[Weapon Master 23/100 defeated.]
Subin looked toward the remaining masters.
The archer fired three arrows simultaneously.
Subin moved toward the mountain.
The arrows followed.
He reached a narrow passage between two rocks.
The archer's next arrows struck the rock instead.
Subin immediately understood.
"The terrain can interfere with ranged weapons."
He didn't stay in the passage.
Instead, he used the mountain to approach the archer.
The halberd master moved to intercept him.
A massive sweeping attack covered the entire path.
Subin stopped.
The halberd came again.
He ducked.
The weapon passed above him.
He moved forward.
The halberd wielder rotated the weapon.
Subin stepped inside its range.
Simple Edge moved.
The projection blocked.
Subin changed his angle.
The halberd followed.
He changed again.
The master struggled to keep the long weapon aligned in the narrow space.
Subin recognized the weakness.
A large weapon became more difficult to control when the environment restricted its movement.
He waited for the correct moment.
The halberd swung.
It struck the mountain wall.
Subin stepped forward.
One cut.
[Weapon Master 24/100 defeated.]
The archer retreated.
Subin chased.
The archer crossed onto a floating platform.
Subin followed.
The platform was narrow.
The archer immediately fired.
Subin cut the arrow.
Another.
He moved.
Another.
He stepped closer.
The archer suddenly jumped to another platform.
Subin followed again.
The distance between the platforms was several meters.
The archer fired while moving.
Subin's Predator's Sense detected the intention.
He jumped.
His foot touched the edge of the next platform.
The archer fired.
Subin cut the arrow.
He continued forward.
The archer drew another arrow.
Too late.
Subin reached him.
Simple Edge stopped at his chest.
[Weapon Master 25/100 defeated.]
Only the shield warrior remained.
It stood at the top of the mountain.
Subin climbed.
The shield warrior waited.
When Subin reached the summit, the warrior charged.
Its shield struck.
Subin moved aside.
The warrior turned.
Another strike.
Subin stepped backward.
The shield pushed him toward the cliff.
Subin understood immediately.
This opponent was using the mountain itself.
The cliff was part of its attack.
Subin moved toward the edge.
The shield warrior followed.
At the last moment, Subin stepped sideways.
The shield warrior continued forward.
Its foot reached the edge.
Subin didn't attack.
He simply touched its back with Simple Edge.
[Weapon Master 26/100 defeated.]
The battlefield became quiet.
Subin looked down from the mountain.
He had defeated five masters without overpowering any of them.
He had used the terrain.
That was the actual lesson.
The system appeared.
[Five Advanced Weapon Masters defeated.]
[Weapon Battlefield Progress: 26/100.]
[Battlefield Control: 71% → 76%.]
[Sword God Foundation: 81% → 84%.]
[Personal Sword Path: 60% → 63%.]
Subin looked at the notifications.
His Personal Sword Path had crossed 60%.
But nothing extraordinary happened.
There was no explosion of power.
No sudden transformation.
Instead, he felt his understanding become more stable.
His swordsmanship had gained another layer.
The system continued.
[Environmental Combat Understanding increased.]
[Terrain can now be incorporated into Sword God Foundation.]
Subin nodded.
"Good."
Then the sky darkened.
A massive shadow passed overhead.
Subin looked up.
Ten figures descended from the floating platforms.
Their levels were significantly higher.
Level 56.
Level 57.
Level 58.
Level 59.
And one figure at the center:
Level 60.
Subin's expression became serious.
These were clearly stronger than the previous masters.
The Level 60 projection landed several dozen meters away.
It carried a sword.
But something was different.
It wasn't simply a swordsman.
The projection carried several weapons across its body.
A sword at its waist.
A spear on its back.
A short axe attached to its belt.
A bow across its shoulder.
A chain wrapped around one arm.
Subin stared at it.
The system appeared.
[Advanced Weapon Master — Level 60]
[Rank: A-]
[Special Classification: Weapon Grandmaster]
Subin's eyes narrowed.
A grandmaster.
The projection removed the bow first.
An arrow appeared between its fingers.
Subin immediately moved.
The arrow flew.
He cut it apart.
Another arrow.
Then another.
The projection fired while walking forward.
Subin continued moving.
The weapon master suddenly dropped the bow.
It drew the spear.
The distance closed instantly.
A thrust came toward Subin's chest.
Subin deflected it.
The spear became a sweeping attack.
Subin stepped backward.
The projection released the spear.
Its hand moved toward the axe.
Subin's expression changed.
"You're changing weapons without breaking rhythm."
The axe appeared.
A massive strike followed.
Subin avoided it.
The projection threw the axe.
Subin cut it apart.
The projection immediately drew the sword.
Their blades collided.
For the first time since entering the Weapon Battlefield, Subin felt genuine pressure.
The swordsmanship wasn't necessarily superior to his.
The problem was that every weapon transition was seamless.
Bow to spear.
Spear to axe.
Axe to sword.
Sword to chain.
Chain to shield.
There was no wasted movement.
No hesitation.
Every weapon created the opening required by the next.
Subin's eyes became brighter.
This was exactly what the trial had been preparing him for.
Not understanding individual weapons.
Not even understanding formations.
Understanding the transition between different combat principles.
The Grandmaster attacked.
Subin blocked.
The sword disappeared.
A chain replaced it.
Subin stepped sideways.
The chain followed.
He cut it.
The projection released it.
A shield appeared.
Subin attacked.
The shield blocked.
The projection used the shield's momentum to push him backward.
Then the spear appeared.
Subin moved.
The spear thrust.
He entered its range.
Simple Edge moved.
The spear master changed weapons.
A short sword appeared.
Subin blocked.
The Grandmaster smiled without emotion.
Then its movement changed.
It wasn't copying the techniques of the earlier masters.
It was combining them.
Subin's Sword Comprehension surged.
[Analysis: 13%.]
The Grandmaster attacked again.
[21%.]
Subin defended.
[29%.]
Another exchange.
[38%.]
Subin suddenly realized something.
The Grandmaster wasn't using every weapon at its maximum strength.
It didn't need to.
It was using each weapon only for the moment when that weapon had the greatest advantage.
The bow controlled distance.
The spear controlled approach.
The shield controlled territory.
The axe controlled momentum.
The chain controlled movement.
The sword controlled transition.
Subin's breathing slowed.
He understood.
The sword was not supposed to imitate every weapon.
The sword needed to remain the center while understanding all of them.
His grip tightened around Simple Edge.
The sword moved.
The Grandmaster blocked.
Subin stepped.
The sword followed.
The Grandmaster changed to spear.
Subin adapted.
The Grandmaster changed to chain.
Subin moved.
His sword never changed.
Yet his combat approach changed constantly.
That was the difference.
He wasn't becoming a weapon master.
He was becoming a swordsman capable of understanding every weapon without abandoning the sword.
The system appeared.
[Sword God Foundation resonance rising.]
[84% → 86%.]
The Grandmaster attacked with the sword again.
Subin met it directly.
Their blades collided.
The Grandmaster shifted into an axe.
Subin moved inside.
The axe missed.
The Grandmaster switched to a chain.
Subin cut the chain's path.
The Grandmaster drew the spear.
Subin stepped forward.
Simple Edge struck.
The projection was forced backward.
Subin continued.
One step.
One cut.
The Grandmaster blocked.
Another step.
Another cut.
The Grandmaster changed weapons.
Subin adapted.
Their battle continued across the mountain.
For the first time, Subin wasn't thinking about which technique to use.
He was simply responding.
His swordsmanship had become instinctive.
The battlefield itself seemed to move around him.
Mountain.
River.
Forest.
Platform.
Every environment became part of his movement.
Simple Edge remained steady in his hand.
Its synchronization changed.
99.97% → 99.98%.
Subin noticed.
He smiled.
"Almost."
The Grandmaster raised its sword.
Its pressure increased.
Subin raised Simple Edge.
The two swords faced each other.
Neither moved.
Then the Grandmaster disappeared.
Subin's Predator's Sense reacted.
He turned.
A sword appeared behind him.
Subin blocked.
The impact shook his entire body.
The Grandmaster immediately changed to a spear.
Subin moved.
Then an axe.
Then a chain.
Then a bow.
Then a sword.
One weapon after another.
Subin continued adapting.
The battle had stopped being a test of individual techniques.
It had become a conversation between two combat philosophies.
One master had learned every weapon.
The other had chosen only one.
The sword.
And Subin was beginning to understand why that choice mattered.
He didn't need a hundred weapons.
He needed to understand a hundred paths through one blade.
His Sword Intent began spreading through his body.
Simple Edge vibrated.
The system appeared.
[Personal Sword Path: 63%.]
[Sword God Foundation: 86%.]
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 38% → 40%.]
Subin stepped forward.
The Grandmaster raised its sword.
Subin's blade moved.
The next exchange began.
