Chapter 50: The Grandmaster's Sword
The next exchange began without warning.
The Level 60 Weapon Grandmaster disappeared.
Subin's eyes followed the movement, but his body reacted before his thoughts could catch up.
Clang!
Simple Edge collided with another sword.
The force pushed Subin backward several meters.
His shoes scraped across the stone.
The Grandmaster did not pursue immediately.
It stood with its sword lowered, watching him.
Subin steadied himself.
That attack had been different.
It wasn't simply fast.
The Grandmaster had changed its rhythm completely.
There had been no preparation.
No obvious shift in posture.
The attack had emerged from stillness.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
"You're hiding the transition."
The Grandmaster moved again.
Subin raised Simple Edge.
The blades collided.
This time Subin didn't retreat.
He shifted his feet and redirected the force.
The Grandmaster immediately changed its grip.
The sword disappeared.
A spear appeared in its hands.
A thrust came toward Subin's chest.
Subin stepped sideways.
The spear swept horizontally.
He ducked.
The weapon changed into a chain.
The chain wrapped around the space where his sword had been.
Subin cut downward.
The chain separated.
The Grandmaster released it before the blade could touch.
An axe appeared.
The axe descended.
Subin used Fang Step.
The weapon struck the ground.
A shockwave spread across the battlefield.
Subin jumped onto a nearby rock.
The Grandmaster raised a bow.
An arrow appeared.
Subin immediately moved.
The arrow struck the rock.
Another followed.
Subin cut it apart.
The Grandmaster fired a third.
Subin moved again.
Then the bow disappeared.
A sword appeared.
The Grandmaster was already in front of him.
Subin barely blocked.
Clang!
The force sent him off the rock.
He landed on the ground and rolled once before recovering.
The Grandmaster followed.
Subin raised Simple Edge.
Their swords crossed.
For several seconds, neither gained an advantage.
The Grandmaster's swordsmanship was extremely refined.
Every strike had a purpose.
Every retreat prepared another attack.
Every defensive movement created an opportunity to change weapons.
Subin's Sword Comprehension continued analyzing.
[Analysis: 47%.]
The number rose slowly.
Subin didn't rush.
He had already learned enough to understand the general concept.
The Grandmaster wasn't mastering seven weapons separately.
It had built a combat system around transitions.
Every weapon existed for a particular moment.
The bow created distance.
The spear exploited distance.
The shield stopped advancement.
The chain restricted movement.
The axe punished predictable movement.
The sword finished exchanges.
The Grandmaster was constantly changing the conditions of battle.
Subin's eyes became sharper.
"But you're still switching between paths."
The Grandmaster attacked.
Subin stepped backward.
A sword strike became a spear thrust.
Subin moved.
The spear became a chain.
Subin cut.
The chain became a shield.
Subin stopped.
The shield became an axe.
Subin moved sideways.
The axe became a sword.
Subin's blade met it.
Clang!
Subin smiled.
"There."
He had seen it.
A tiny moment.
Less than a fraction of a second.
Every transition required intent.
The weapon could change instantly, but the Grandmaster still needed to decide which weapon would replace it.
That decision was the only opening.
Subin didn't attack the weapon.
He attacked the decision.
The Grandmaster switched from sword to spear.
Subin moved before the spear fully appeared.
Simple Edge struck.
The Grandmaster blocked.
But its stance became slightly unstable.
Subin continued.
The Grandmaster changed to shield.
Subin didn't attack.
He moved around it.
The Grandmaster changed to chain.
Subin stepped inside.
The chain missed.
The Grandmaster changed to axe.
Subin stepped closer.
The axe had no room to swing properly.
The Grandmaster abandoned it.
Sword.
Subin was waiting.
Their blades collided.
Subin's Sword Intent spread through Simple Edge.
The Grandmaster's sword was pushed aside.
Subin's blade stopped at its throat.
The projection froze.
Then it stepped backward.
The trial wasn't over.
Subin lowered his sword slightly.
The Grandmaster changed its stance.
The surrounding battlefield began to shake.
The mountains disappeared.
The river vanished.
The forest collapsed into particles of blue mana.
The floating platforms descended.
Everything returned to the original stone arena.
The Grandmaster stood at the center.
The system appeared.
[Weapon Grandmaster — Final Combat Phase.]
[Level: 60.]
[Restriction Removed.]
[Full Weapon Mastery permitted.]
Subin's expression became serious.
Until now, the Grandmaster had been testing him with controlled weapon transitions.
Now there would be no limitations.
The Grandmaster drew its sword.
Subin tightened his grip.
The two swordsmen moved.
Their blades collided.
The sound echoed across the entire battlefield.
The Grandmaster attacked with pure swordsmanship.
Subin blocked.
The Grandmaster's sword moved again.
Subin countered.
Their movements were becoming faster.
Unlike the previous sword master, this opponent wasn't simply testing Subin's technique.
It was constantly changing its swordsmanship according to Subin's reactions.
High guard.
Low guard.
Long range.
Close range.
Direct attack.
Counterattack.
Feint.
Pressure.
Retreat.
Subin adapted.
His sword moved naturally.
He didn't consciously activate Silver Flow.
He didn't consciously activate Flowing Edge.
He didn't consciously activate Seamless Edge.
Everything had become part of his movement.
[Analysis: 63%.]
The Grandmaster attacked from the left.
Subin blocked.
The sword turned.
Subin redirected.
A thrust.
Subin stepped aside.
A sweeping cut.
He lowered his body.
The Grandmaster suddenly stopped.
Subin stopped too.
Both swordsmen stood silently.
Subin understood.
The Grandmaster was waiting for him to attack.
It wanted to test his initiative.
Subin took a slow breath.
He didn't attack.
The Grandmaster didn't move.
Several seconds passed.
Then Subin stepped forward.
One simple cut.
The Grandmaster blocked.
Subin continued with another.
The Grandmaster blocked again.
Subin changed his angle.
The Grandmaster adapted.
Subin changed again.
The Grandmaster followed.
Their movements became increasingly similar.
Subin suddenly felt something strange.
He wasn't fighting against the Grandmaster anymore.
He was beginning to understand it.
Not through copying.
Through recognition.
The same principles he had spent weeks learning were now appearing naturally in the opponent's sword.
Foundation.
Flow.
Control.
Intent.
Edge.
Continuity.
Adaptation.
All seven.
But there was something beyond them.
Subin's eyes narrowed.
The Grandmaster's sword moved.
Subin blocked.
The Grandmaster changed direction.
Subin followed.
Then Subin realized what was missing from the seven principles.
Choice.
The seven principles explained how to fight.
But a swordsman still had to decide what the sword meant in each moment.
The Grandmaster had mastered every weapon.
But it had no personal desire.
No personal philosophy.
No personal path.
It was perfect.
And because it was perfect, it could be understood.
Subin smiled.
"I see."
His sword moved.
The Grandmaster blocked.
Subin attacked again.
The Grandmaster countered.
Subin didn't resist.
He changed.
The Grandmaster changed.
Subin changed again.
The two swords continued exchanging attacks.
Then Subin stopped trying to create the perfect sword movement.
Instead, he used the movement that felt right to him.
A simple step.
A simple cut.
No unnecessary force.
No unnecessary speed.
No complicated technique.
Simple Edge moved forward.
The Grandmaster blocked.
Subin changed the angle.
The Grandmaster followed.
Subin changed again.
The Grandmaster adapted.
Then Subin deliberately stopped adapting.
He remained on the same line.
The Grandmaster attacked.
Subin met it.
Their swords collided.
The Grandmaster tried to redirect.
Subin followed.
The Grandmaster tried to change the rhythm.
Subin maintained his own.
The Grandmaster tried to force him backward.
Subin stepped forward.
For the first time, the Grandmaster was reacting to Subin rather than controlling the exchange.
The system appeared.
[Sword Comprehension: 96%.]
Subin's Sword Intent increased.
38% → 41%.
Simple Edge vibrated in his hand.
[Synchronization: 99.98%.]
The Grandmaster launched its strongest sword attack.
A massive wave of condensed sword energy formed along the blade.
Subin didn't retreat.
He raised Simple Edge.
Sword Intent gathered around the blade.
He remembered every sword he had encountered.
The Goblin Captain.
The Forest Fang Lord.
The Stone Knight.
The Imperial Sword Master.
The Skyfall Sword Guardian.
The hundreds of sword projections.
The Weapon Masters.
Every battle had taught him something.
But none of them had given him the answer.
The answer had to be his.
Subin stepped forward.
Simple Edge moved.
There was no named technique.
No elaborate stance.
No special effect.
Just one sword.
One intention.
One cut.
The two attacks collided.
For a moment, the battlefield was silent.
Then a thin crack appeared across the Grandmaster's sword.
The crack spread.
The weapon shattered.
The Grandmaster looked at Subin.
Then its body began dissolving.
[Weapon Grandmaster defeated.]
[Weapon Master 27/100 defeated.]
Subin lowered Simple Edge.
He wasn't exhausted.
But his mind was filled with new understanding.
The system appeared.
[Complete Weapon Transition understood.]
[Advanced Combat Principle acquired.]
Weapon Transition
Understanding the relationship between different weapon paths allows the swordsman to recognize and respond to transitions between combat principles.
This does not grant mastery of other weapons.
It strengthens the user's ability to understand combat without abandoning their chosen path.
Subin read the description.
Then another notification appeared.
[Sword God Foundation: 86% → 90%.]
[Personal Sword Path: 63% → 69%.]
[Sword Intent Comprehension: 41% → 44%.]
Then:
[Simple Edge synchronization: 99.98% → 99.99%.]
Subin stared at the number.
Only 0.01% remained.
Yet strangely, he didn't feel impatient.
He understood now that forcing the final synchronization would defeat the purpose.
Simple Edge wasn't waiting for more strength.
It was waiting for him to become the swordsman capable of wielding it.
The battlefield remained silent.
Then the system displayed another notification.
[Weapon Battlefield Progress: 27/100.]
[Twenty-seven Weapon Masters defeated.]
[Next trial begins after recovery.]
Subin looked across the arena.
There were still seventy-three masters.
And the levels would continue increasing.
He sat down on a large stone and rested Simple Edge across his knees.
He didn't immediately continue.
Instead, he closed his eyes.
He replayed the battle in his mind.
The transitions.
The timing.
The decisions.
The moments when he had followed his instincts instead of relying on learned techniques.
His Sword God Foundation continued absorbing the experience.
90%.
Subin opened his eyes.
His sword path had reached a point where techniques were becoming less important.
That didn't mean techniques were useless.
It meant they were becoming part of something larger.
His own swordsmanship.
He stood.
The battlefield responded.
The distant mountains returned.
The river began flowing again.
The forest reappeared.
The floating platforms rose into the sky.
Then hundreds of weapons emerged from the ground.
The next group was already being prepared.
Subin looked at them calmly.
The trial was far from finished.
But he no longer saw the remaining masters as obstacles.
Each one was another opportunity to sharpen his sword.
He raised Simple Edge.
Its synchronization remained at 99.99%.
One hundred weapon masters awaited him.
And somewhere among them was the understanding that would take him one step closer to becoming a true Sword God.
