Shane Caldwell knew Vera Xavier was truly outstanding. He worried that once she was at Veridia University, more and more guys would fall for her.

He had to find a way to get closer to Vera Xavier; otherwise, he feared they would only drift further and further apart.

So, during a break in their military training, he saw Vera Xavier go to fill her water bottle and decided to grab his own and go as well.

While Vera Xavier was filling her bottle, Shane Caldwell came up beside her and asked softly, "Any plans for your day off tomorrow?"

His question reminded Vera Xavier that their weekly day off was tomorrow. A slight smile touched her lips. "Of course I’m going to spend time with Nathaniel Nathan!"

Shane Caldwell had actually come over to ask her out. He’d considered she might refuse and had even thought of ways to persuade her, but he never imagined she would state so frankly that she was going to spend her day with Nathaniel Nathan!

Vera Xavier saw the unpleasant look on his face and could guess what he was thinking. She smiled and asked, "What about you, Class President? Any plans?"

"I..." Shane Caldwell started, but before he could finish, Vera Xavier smiled at him. "You must be busy, Class President. Well, I hope you have a great time."

She turned to leave, but Shane Caldwell reached out and grabbed her hand. She was genuinely shocked he would be so bold and stared at him in surprise. He mustered his courage. "Vera Xavier, I like you," he said. "I’d like to take you out tomorrow."

Vera Xavier never expected him to confess to her at a time like this. In a way, it was the first time in this life or her last that someone had confessed to her so directly. After all, whenever Nathaniel Nathan expressed his feelings, he was always so proud and awkward, never this straightforward. The problem, however, was that she didn’t like him back. And on top of that, he was her cousin!

She snatched her hand back, a look of pure shock on her face. She looked at Shane Caldwell and said, "Class President, did the military training bake your brain or something?"

With that, she turned and walked away.

She’d had a vague inkling back in Crestfall that Shane Caldwell might be interested in her, but she’d never imagined he actually *liked* her. This was just a huge, awkward mess!

Shane Caldwell called out to her retreating back, "Vera Xavier, I’m serious!"

Vera Xavier waved a dismissive hand as she walked away. "I suggest you go get your head checked at a hospital. Oh, or better yet, go ask Nathaniel Nathan’s fists what they think."

Shane Caldwell was mortified. Luckily, there weren’t many other students at the water station. Still, plenty of people had seen him grab her hand, and the gazes from the students nearby were filled with gossip.

Susan Caldwell had also noticed the commotion, and her eyes narrowed slightly.

Crystal Quinn, sitting beside Susan Caldwell, sneered, "Vera Xavier has no shame. School has barely started and she’s already flirting around with so many guys!"

Susan Caldwell said blandly, "She’s beautiful. It’s perfectly normal for a lot of guys to like her."

"I don’t even think she’s as pretty as you!" Crystal Quinn huffed. "She’s just some village girl from the countryside. Her looks and her presence can’t even begin to compare to yours."

Susan Caldwell just smiled faintly without saying more. The bruises on her face, courtesy of Vera Xavier, had mostly faded by now. Internally, however, she was delighted by Shane Caldwell’s actions today. She would love nothing more than for him and Vera Xavier to become entangled.

When Vera Xavier returned to her squad’s formation, Fiona Wright asked curiously, "Who was that guy just now?"
