Chapter 228: Chapter 228: The Skalan Star Sector Chief Is Missing?
Liang He simply smiled softly at President Lucas’s proposal, remaining noncommittal.
With more and more fluffy animals under her care, she was stretched too thin and truly couldn’t manage much else.
She rarely even checked the fan comments on her Fur Raising Officer account nowadays. Mainly, she just didn’t have the time. Besides, she wouldn’t be able to respond even if she did read them, since they were all begging her to start a livestream.
"Cedriel, Lanton, time to eat."
She had heated up the food for everyone, naturally not leaving out the Mojin King Tiger and the Canglan Hunting Eagle.
"AWOOO~"
"SCREECH!"
Hearing Liang He’s call, Cedriel and Lanton responded immediately, then obediently ran to her side, ready to enjoy their delicious meal.
Liang He opened the prepared cans and poured the contents into their exclusive food bowls. Then, she borrowed a small plate from the staff and portioned a little out for Elias.
"Little Black, I’m sorry. I didn’t know you tagged along, so you’ll have to make do with this."
Listening to Liang He’s gentle explanation as she stroked him, Elias didn’t feel offended or displeased in the slightest. Coiled around Liang He’s wrist, he simply followed her hand and began to enjoy the food on the small plate she held up.
It wasn’t until Elias finished eating and Liang He rubbed his little belly, confirming he was full, that she finally started eating her own meal.
"I’m sorry, Brother Hao, President Lucas. I’m still a bit sleepy, so I’m going back to bed. Good night."
Eating and drinking one’s fill always made one drowsy. Liang He lazily stifled a yawn, said her early good nights, and drifted back to sleep. Sure enough, pulling an all-nighter required even more time to catch up on rest.
"AWOOO..."
Seeing that Liang He had fallen asleep, Cedriel let out a low growl at Lanton, then pointed his paw at a nearby blanket.
Lanton immediately understood. Together, they covered Liang He with the blanket. Cedriel even used his paws to gently tuck in the corners, ensuring no cold air would seep in.
"Cedriel and Lanton are truly so good to Liang He. They’ve even learned how to take care of people."
Taking in the entire scene, President Lucas started chatting about everyday matters with Huo An again.
This time, Huo An didn’t rush to find an excuse to slip away. Instead, following President Lucas’s words, he stared deeply at Cedriel and Lanton. He didn’t mercifully withdraw his gaze until they froze like motionless statues under his stare.
It wasn’t that they were afraid of him; rather, they worried he would tattle on them to Liang He.
"President, there’s something I’d like to ask you."
As if suddenly recalling something, Huo An pulled President Lucas to the other side, far away from where Liang He and the animals were, to avoid disturbing her rest.
"You want to ask me about the District Chief of the Skalan Star Reserve?" Hearing Huo An’s question, President Lucas nodded in realization. "That’s true. With your status, I suppose this couldn’t be kept from you anyway."
In truth, Huo An’s initial doubt was why the person who stepped forward to seek help wasn’t the District Chief of the Skalan Star Reserve.
As fellow reserve district chiefs, Huo An and the others shared a work group chat. The District Chief of the Skalan Star Reserve could have easily reached out to him directly through the work chat. There was absolutely no need to have Goring ask President Lucas to personally invite someone.
"This matter was ordered by the higher-ups to be kept strictly confidential for now, so it hasn’t been announced publicly," President Lucas explained in a hushed tone after glancing around to ensure no one else was present.
"Bolu, the District Chief of the Skalan Star Reserve, suddenly disappeared a while ago. They suspect his disappearance is highly likely related to that bizarre sea area.
"Either Bolu was swallowed by the sea like the others, leaving no trace.
"Or, that sea area turning into a man-eating entity has something to do with him.
"Neither speculation is suitable for public broadcast, which is why the higher-ups demanded secrecy until the truth is uncovered.
"Mainly, they are afraid of wronging Bolu. Even if they explain it later, those who have already decided he is at fault probably won’t listen. You can understand that, right?"
With Liang He’s previous situation as an example, Huo An naturally understood what President Lucas meant.
"Understood. So, the Skalan Star Reserve is now primarily managed by Deputy Governor Goring?"
If that were the case, Huo An could understand why President Lucas was the one to approach them.
A Vice District Chief would not be invited to join the district chiefs’ work chat unless under special circumstances where they needed to exercise the district chief’s duties as an acting chief. Unfortunately, with Bolu missing and his situation gagged, Goring’s position became rather awkward. He had no choice but to entrust President Lucas to invite Liang He.
"Exactly. It’s a good thing he discovered it in time. After noticing the issue, he reported it immediately, preventing even more severe consequences."
If Bolu truly made a mistake this time, or met an unfortunate end, Goring’s promotion to District Chief would be set in stone.
Having cleared up his doubts, Huo An didn’t keep questioning President Lucas. Instead, he advised him to rest early while he himself went back to work.
The two-day, one-night journey passed without obstacle or danger, and they soon arrived at their destination.
"Miss Liang He, I hope this journey was to your satisfaction. May we meet again."
"Thank you. You’ve all worked hard."
After a friendly farewell, Liang He and the others smoothly stepped onto the soil of the Skalan Star under the watchful eyes of the pilots and staff.
Looking out at the vast, endless ocean, Liang He actually found herself harboring a faint sense of anticipation for the journey ahead.
"President Lucas! District Chief Huo An! Miss Liang He!"
They had barely found their footing when a loud shout rang out from nearby, instantly drawing everyone’s collective gaze to the approaching figure.
Looking closely, it was none other than Deputy Governor Goring—the man responsible for her unforgettable, mortifyingly embarrassing moment the last time they met.
"Goring, you rascal, why did you come in person?"
President Lucas gave Goring a huge hug. The old man was always exceptionally enthusiastic toward the younger generation he favored.
"President, what are you saying? You’re all my great benefactors who traveled thousands of miles to help me. Of course I had to come receive you personally!"
Describing it as ’thousands of miles’ was actually quite inaccurate; after all, the distance between planets should be measured in light-years.
"Alright, enough flattering!" President Lucas scolded him with a smile, preparing to formally introduce the two sides.
"President, District Chief Huo An is the head of a key reserve. If I didn’t even recognize him, wouldn’t all my years of work have been for nothing?"
As for Liang He, it went without saying. Back during the meeting, he had even tried to poach her.
Hearing him say this, President Lucas felt he had a point, so he skipped the unnecessary formalities and cut straight to the chase.
"Haha, since you already know each other, I won’t do individual introductions. Let’s get going!"
The most pressing matter right now was rescuing the missing personnel. President Lucas’s trip to the Sky Shining Star to recruit them had already delayed things quite a bit. Coupled with the fact that they took a private plane to the Skalan Star, the entire ordeal had held them up for several days. Everyone was probably getting anxious from the wait.
At this moment, Deputy Governor Goring dispensed with the pleasantries and hurriedly invited them onto the boat.
"I’ll have to trouble everyone to hold out a little longer. Once we board the Sea Ship, we can take a proper rest."
