The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride
Chapter 128: Decision on the Certificate
There was a crease in the middle of Rauf’s eyebrows as he stared at the marriage certificate in front of him.
The names were bold and clear: Rauf Salvador and Amie Trevor.
To him, it felt as if he was holding a ticking bomb.
Fortunately, his phone rang before he could do something as dangerous as shredding the certificate into pieces.
His attention snapped from the certificate to his phone.
Finally, his lawyer was calling.
"Any news?" he asked.
The lawyer’s voice was smooth at the other end. "Sir, I’ve already done my research on the certificate, and it is legally valid. Even if Miss Amie wasn’t the woman who was present during the marriage, she’s the one whose name is legally tied to yours. On record, she is currently recognized as your wife."
Rauf fisted his palm until his knuckles turned white. "Then what do I have to do to change it?"
"The circumstances surrounding the marriage give you grounds to challenge it. But if you want Miss Amie’s name completely removed from your life, the simplest option is to legally end the marriage and, if Mrs. Salvador agrees in the future, make her your legal wife."
Rauf nodded. "Great. I want you to process the divorce. I don’t care how she gets the papers. I’ll sign them, but I want nothing of my properties to go to her."
"Of course, sir. Considering that Miss Amie wasn’t actually the woman who lived with you as your wife, we have grounds to fight any financial claims she makes. But I should warn you that she could contest the divorce or demand a settlement."
Rauf cut the lawyer off before he could continue.
"I know her. She’ll want a percentage of my property, but make sure she gets nothing. If you need any information, I’ll give it to you."
"Okay, sir. I’ll work on it," the lawyer responded.
Just as Rauf was dropping the phone from his ear, the door to his office suddenly opened, and June walked in.
She was wearing another of those maternity dresses, and her stomach was more prominent than before.
It seemed to be growing at a faster rate now.
Rauf’s gaze lingered on her growing stomach before slowly moving back up her body.
An inappropriate thought crossed his mind.
He wondered what it would feel like to make love to her now that her body had changed with pregnancy.
Rauf immediately scolded himself internally.
Not now.
But when his attention snapped back to June, she was staring at the certificate on his table.
Her eyes were filled with anger, and her lips twisted into an angry scowl.
"What’s this?" she asked.
She knew exactly what it was, but it was hard for her to believe that Rauf would actually bring this paper that had defined her five years with him into his office.
Angry, she turned to leave, but before she could, his voice stopped her.
"It isn’t what you’re thinking, June."
"I’m not thinking of anything." Her voice was poised and controlled.
But regardless, Rauf continued.
"I’m just looking for a way to get her name off this certificate."
"I already told you. I don’t care about that, and I don’t want my name on your certificate either."
"I know, but even with that, her name doesn’t deserve to be on my certificate. She doesn’t deserve to be called Mrs. Salvador."
Confused by his words, June turned towards him.
She searched his eyes to see if he was just joking with her, but from what she could see, he was actually serious.
June could hardly believe that Rauf would go to that extent just to get Amie’s name off his certificate.
Inside, she was jubilating, but outside, she only nodded.
"Fine. Do whatever you want."
Rauf watched her leave the room.
Immediately June was out of the office, a wide smile appeared on her face.
She could remember six years ago when she had signed Amie’s name on the certificate.
June had wished more than anything that it was her own name written there.
But she had known her place then.
She was only the substitute.
But now, Rauf’s actions made her feel like she was more.
The sound of Bingo barking distracted her.
She had actually gone to Rauf’s office to inform him that she was ready for the next training.
But as it was now, she didn’t want to engage in any training again.
She wasn’t interested in doing any research about the Monterrios either.
So instead, she followed Bingo out of the living room.
Back in Rauf’s office, he picked up the certificate and hid it.
He was just waiting for the moment his lawyer would confirm that the divorce had been finalized so he could burn the certificate to ashes.
Whatever bound him to Amie shouldn’t exist.
Just as he was filing the certificate away, the sound of a knock on his door made him look up.
It couldn’t be June coming in again, right?
The door opened slowly, and Henson came in.
Rauf nodded.
Without speaking, he waited.
Henson placed his hands behind his back.
"Boss, since you asked us to keep an eye on Dante Monterrio, we’ve been monitoring his movements. Recently, he’s been seen around Vassari Group."
The report left a sick feeling in the pit of Rauf’s stomach.
What could Dante be looking for at Vassari Group?
"Do you have any idea why he was there?"
Henson shook his head. "No, sir."
"Okay. Continue to keep an eye on him, but be careful. If Dante finds out anyone is watching him, he isn’t the kind of man to forgive easily."
Henson nodded.
He knew that.
He had read about how ruthless the Monterrio clan could be. He wasn’t ready to be used as a scapegoat.
Rauf continued, "And how about my mother? Has she made any moves recently?"
Rauf knew giving his mother free rein would make her do whatever she wanted.
And he was curious about what she would do.
"Mrs. Salvador Snr. hasn’t been seen with Mr. Trevor, and recently, she hasn’t left the guesthouse. But she’s been ordering more things than usual."
Rauf sighed in relief.
"As long as she isn’t mingling with Samir, let her spend as much as she wants."
Rauf thought for a while before adding, "And have you bought everything I asked you to?"
Henson nodded.
"Yes, Boss. It will arrive soon."
Rauf’s lips curled into a smile.
He couldn’t wait to show June what he had planned.
