The Supreme Necromancer
"Twenty?"
"Twelve enemy generals."
Seraphina raised one finger.
"Plus eight Fire Elementals."
She looked at him.
"Twenty."
Yun Che did not answer. He simply observed his surroundings for a few seconds before feeling his hand move toward the edge of his white mask.
An extremely faint vibration passed through the room. The spiritual energy of the mountain range was fluctuating.
Yun Che stood up.
Seraphina immediately took a step back.
"You’re still injured."
"It doesn’t matter."
He walked to the door and opened it. A distant spiritual pressure swept through the mountains.
The barrier.
Yun Che closed his eyes for a moment. He could feel that the formation that had once covered the entire mountain range was being pushed to its limit.
The spiritual energy was being consumed rapidly, and the barrier was weakening with every passing second.
Yun Che opened his eyes again.
"This is actually worse than I expected."
Seraphina remained behind him.
"I told you."
Yun Che turned around.
"Take me to your mother."
Seraphina thought for a moment, staring intently at the necromancer before answering.
"Let’s go."
The two left the room.
The path to the queen’s hall was different.
Medusas rushed through the passages carrying weapons, spiritual crystals to reinforce the formations, and boxes of medicine.
No one was celebrating the victory at the strait. The war had merely changed its form.
Seraphina walked quickly beside Yun Che, and not long after, they arrived at the great hall.
The doors opened, and as always, Ariselle was standing at the center.
The Medusa Queen stood before a huge stone table covered with maps of the mountain range.
Her long green hair fell down her back, blending with the dozens of small snakes that moved slowly.
Her bright green eyes were fixed on the map, and the four elders stood around her.
Vaelra kept her arms crossed, her expression stern.
Nysara silently observed the maps, carefully analyzing every piece of information.
Thesira stood with one hand near her sword, her body still bearing the marks from the battle at the strait.
Mirevra was the quietest of the four, but her eyes followed every movement around her.
They all looked exhausted.
Ariselle raised her eyes when she noticed Yun Che.
"You’ve awakened."
"Yes."
Vaelra immediately narrowed her eyes.
"Then we can finally know what happened at the logistics base."
Thesira took a step forward.
"More than six thousand soldiers dead. How did you do that?"
Nysara looked at Yun Che.
"And a tenth-stage Profound Nascent general."
"You weren’t only at the Tempered Body realm before. Is your current realm the Profound Nascent realm?"
Mirevra continued observing him.
"We want to know how."
Yun Che did not answer.
"I came here because I want to speak with the queen."
Vaelra frowned.
"We are speaking with you."
"No."
Yun Che looked directly at Ariselle.
"I want to speak with her."
Thesira clenched her fingers.
"You can’t simply come in here after being unconscious for two days and demand a private conversation with the queen."
Yun Che remained still.
"Then don’t let me speak."
The pressure in the hall increased. Vaelra took a step forward.
"Necromancer..."
"Enough."
Ariselle’s voice cut through the hall, and all the elders fell silent. The queen looked at Yun Che.
"Come with me."
She turned around.
"Let’s talk."
Ariselle led Yun Che through a side passage. The stone door closed behind them, and finally, the two were alone.
Yun Che raised his hand to his face and slowly removed the white mask.
This time, Ariselle showed no surprise. Yun Che placed the mask on the table.
"Seraphina told me what happened while I was asleep."
Ariselle looked away.
"Then you already know."
"I know enough."
He walked a few steps.
"Twenty tenth-stage cultivators are attacking the barrier."
Ariselle nodded.
"Twelve generals still alive."
"Eight Fire Elementals."
"And the Earth Elementals are providing artifacts, information, and resources to our enemies."
Ariselle closed her eyes for a few seconds. Yun Che looked at her.
"What do you intend to do about it?"
The queen took a while to answer, and when she finally spoke, her voice was tired.
"There isn’t much we can do now."
Yun Che remained silent, allowing Ariselle to continue speaking:
"We have a little over five thousand combatants left. The cultivators from the Profound Flower Sect left some time ago."
She pointed at the map.
"They still have around eighteen thousand in their army."
Then she pointed toward another region.
"They have twelve tenth-stage Profound Nascent cultivators."
Her hand stopped.
"And now they have eight Fire Elementals at the same stage."
Ariselle took a deep breath.
"The Earth Elementals aren’t fighting directly, but they provided the means necessary to destroy our last defense."
She looked at Yun Che.
"The barrier is weakening."
Yun Che did not answer.
"When it falls, we will lose our greatest advantage and our only way of resisting the enemy."
The queen let out a bitter laugh.
"Then tell me, necromancer, I mean, Yun Che."
She slowly opened her arms.
"How are we supposed to win?"
Yun Che stared at Ariselle as she continued:
"Do you want me to say that there is still hope?"
She smiled bitterly.
"That we’ll find another hidden formation? That our five thousand warriors will defeat eighteen thousand enemies? That seven cultivators and I will face twelve generals, eight Fire Elementals, and still find a way to protect our civilians?"
She shook her head.
"There isn’t one."
The smile disappeared.
"I am the Medusa Queen."
Her voice became lower.
"And even I can’t see a way to win this war."
Yun Che took a step forward.
"Then what will happen?"
Ariselle remained silent.
"Do you intend to simply accept the fate of your tribe?"
She let out another laugh, and this time, there was no humor in it.
"Fate?"
She looked at him.
"Perhaps that is exactly what it is."
Ariselle slowly ran a hand through her green hair.
"I considered evacuating Seraphina."
Yun Che remained attentive.
"Some people from our tribe as well."
She continued:
"Some elders. Some children. Some of our cultivators."
"But you can’t."
"No."
She pointed at the map.
"The entire mountain range is surrounded."
Her voice became heavy.
"There is no safe route I can use to save even one of my people."
She took a deep breath.
"I must be a terrible queen, don’t you think?"
"The only thing we can do now is send the wounded and those who can no longer fight into the mausoleum."
