The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 130: A Night Beneath the Stars
For the first time since the cosmic map had awakened, Rhaevia ordered the research team to cease all operations.
The seven illuminated star systems remained projected in the laboratory’s central chamber, their unfamiliar coordinates awaiting further analysis.
Project Genesis had already begun processing the available data streams, but the sheer volume of information made immediate conclusions impossible.
They needed rest. More importantly, Rhaevia needed time to think.
By nightfall, she and Raevor had left the laboratory behind and traveled to a crystalline plateau overlooking the forest. The expedition’s temporary camp lit the distance, its lights reflected across enormous crystal formations that rose from the ground like frozen waves.
Above them, the sky shimmered with countless brilliant stars.
Rhaevia settled onto a smooth outcropping of crystal, drawing her knees slightly closer as she studied the unfamiliar constellations. “It is beautiful,” she murmured into the night.
Raevor sat down beside her, his silver eyes following her gaze toward the zenith. “You have seen more star systems than most people could imagine in several lifetimes.”
“I have seen battlefields beneath them,” she replied, her voice dropping an octave. “Fleets burning in orbit, planets losing their entire atmospheres to plasma bombardment.” She paused for a breath before adding, “But I do not think I have ever truly stopped to appreciate them.”
He turned his head to look at her directly. “Why not?”
“Because there was always something else that needed to be done,” she admitted.
The answer came more softly than she had intended. In her previous life, she had carried the weight of being humanity’s final female general.
Survival had consumed every single waking moment of her existence. Even after her return, the mysteries surrounding her identity and the emergence of the Third Sovereign had left little room for anything resembling an ordinary life.
There was always another enemy on the horizon. There was always another discovery waiting to be made. There was always another catastrophe lingering in the shadows.
Rhaevia rested her palms against the cool, smooth crystal surface beneath her. “Do you ever wonder what you will do when all of this is finally over?”
Raevor considered the question carefully, his dark coat shifting slightly in the mountain breeze. “When what is over?”
“The wars, the conflicts, the Sovereigns fighting over civilizations that may not even remember why their battles began,” she said, turning her head to meet his gaze.
“Suppose we defeat the Third Sovereign, uncover the truth about Origin Energy, and finally understand what happened to our civilization. What then?”
“Then we deal with whatever comes next,” he stated plainly.
She gave him an unimpressed look. “That is not an answer.”
“It is a practical one,” he countered calmly.
“Of course you would say that,” she replied with a faint shake of her head.
A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips. He leaned back against the towering crystal formation behind them, resting one arm over his knee.
“I have not thought much about life after the war,” he admitted, his gaze returning to the sky. “For most of my life, I was trained to prepare for the next conflict. My rank, my abilities, and even my daily routine were built around becoming more effective on the battlefield.”
Rhaevia listened in silence, letting his words carry over the plateau.
“I assumed that once the fighting ended, I would simply find another purpose,” he continued. “Protect another territory, train another generation of soldiers, and accept whatever assignment comes next.”
“Did you actually want that?” she asked.
Raevor was silent for several seconds. “I am not sure I ever asked myself that question.”
His honesty surprised her more than any declaration of intent could have. She had always known him as the youngest Major General in Imperial history, a man who measured danger with precision and placed duty above personal comfort.
Yet beneath that unyielding military discipline was someone who had never been given the opportunity to decide what he wanted for himself.
“What if you did not have to protect anyone?” she asked, her voice soft against the wind. “What if there were no battles waiting for you on the horizon?”
He turned to face her fully. “Then I would have to learn what I wanted to protect when there was nothing threatening it.”
Something tightened gently in her chest as his words settled between them. The answer was simple, yet it carried a weight she understood all too well.
Rhaevia turned her attention back to the shining constellations above.
“I think I would like to continue researching,” she said, her expression softening. “Explore unknown worlds, discover civilizations we have never encountered, and build places where different species can live without being forced to fight for the right to exist.”
He raised an eyebrow slightly. “And when you’re tired of researching?”
“Sleep,” she answered instantly.
“That is an encouraging development,” he noted with dry humor.
She laughed, the sound bright and startling against the vast night. “Perhaps I would cultivate a garden, write stories, live somewhere peaceful where I can complain about the weather instead of planetary destruction.”
“I could arrange that,” he said.
She smiled at him. “You cannot arrange the weather, General.”
“I can arrange adequate shelter,” he replied without hesitation.
She shook her head, unable to hide the warmth in her expression.
For several minutes, neither of them spoke. The silence between them was comfortable, filled only with the faint sound of the crystalline forest below.
Their resonance flowed gently between them, no longer strained by the pressure of combat or amplified by the mechanisms of the laboratory. It felt warm and steady, like a thread connecting two people who had spent far too long standing on opposite sides of endless battlefields.
Rhaevia watched the faint reflection of the stars dancing within Raevor’s silver eyes.
She had spent so many lifetimes preparing to survive the end of the world that she had barely considered what she might do if she finally succeeded.
A peaceful home, an open sky, and a future she could choose for herself seemed like distant dreams, yet they felt remarkably close in this moment.
Most of all, she realized she wanted someone beside her who would stay even when there was nothing left to fight. The realization settled into her heart with startling, undeniable clarity.
She did not just want Raevor beside her while the galaxy was at war. She turned her full attention toward him, her heart beating with certainty. She wanted him beside her when there was no war at all.
