For several seconds, Rhaevia simply looked at Raevor.

The crystalline plateau stretched beneath the stars, its luminous formations casting pale reflections across his dark coat. The wind stirred his hair, and the silver of his eyes caught the distant light of the research camp.

He waited without questioning her silence.

That was one of the things she had come to appreciate about him. Raevor never demanded that she explain every thought passing through her mind. He could stand beside her in silence without making her feel obligated to fill it.

Tonight, however, she had something to say. Or rather, something to do.

“Raevor,” she called softly.

He turned toward her. “Yes?”

“Do you remember what I told you before?” she asked, her gaze steady.

His expression grew thoughtful. “You have told me many things.”

“That is not particularly helpful.”

“Then you should be more specific,” he replied, a faint glint in his eyes.

Rhaevia narrowed her eyes at him, but the faint curve of her lips betrayed her amusement. “I told you that I would give you an answer when I was ready.”

The teasing disappeared from his face. He understood immediately.

Their resonance stirred between them, a gentle current of golden and silver energy that had become so familiar she sometimes forgot how extraordinary it was. There was no battlefield to unite them tonight, no enemy forcing their abilities into perfect synchronization. They were simply two people sitting beneath an unfamiliar sky.

“Yes,” he said. “I remember.”

“I have spent so much time thinking about what happened in my previous lives, what I used to be, and what I might become,” she said, lowering her gaze briefly. “Sometimes, I think I have been so busy trying to understand my past that I have forgotten I am allowed to choose my future.”

Raevor remained still, giving her his full attention.

“And I want you in that future,” she declared, looking back up into his eyes.

Something shifted in his expression. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but she saw it, the moment her words reached the man beneath the general’s maintained composure.

“Rhaevia…” he began.

“Let me finish before you say something annoyingly reasonable,” she interrupted smoothly.

His lips parted, then closed again. She smiled at his rare speechlessness.

“I don’t want you beside me because we have a perfect resonance,” Rhaevia continued, her tone earnest. “I don’t want you because some ancient memory says we once fought together. And I certainly don’t want you because the universe seems determined to involve us in every catastrophe it can find.”

“That last reason would be understandable,” he murmured dryly.

She laughed softly at his characteristic pragmatism. “I want you because you’re you. Because you listen when I speak, even when you disagree with me. Because you worry when I forget to eat. Because you stand beside me without trying to decide what I should become.”

Her voice softened into a gentle whisper. “And because when I imagine a peaceful life, you’re there.”

For once, Raevor seemed to have no immediate answer.

Rhaevia reached out, her slim fingers searching for his. His hand closed around hers, careful and warm. Their resonance brightened at the contact, golden light weaving through silver threads beneath their joined hands.

She could feel his restraint, not rejection, but the deliberate effort of a man who would rather wait than take something she had not freely offered. It made her decision that much easier.

“There’s one more thing,” she whispered, leaning closer.

“What is it?” he asked softly.

Instead of answering, Rhaevia closed the distance between them. She paused just before their faces met, giving him time to understand what she intended. His silver eyes searched hers, and when she saw the unasked question in them, she answered with a small, certain nod.

Then she kissed him.

It was a gentle kiss, brief and tentative. For all the battles she had survived and all the impossible powers she had commanded, Rhaevia discovered that this required an entirely different kind of courage.

For one suspended moment, the galaxy seemed impossibly quiet.

Then Raevor lifted his free hand, his fingers resting gently against her cheek. He did not pull her closer until she deliberately leaned into his touch. Only then did he return the kiss, with a deep tenderness that made her chest tighten far more intensely than any physical wound ever had.

Golden light suddenly erupted beneath their feet.

Rhaevia startled, drawing back just enough to look at him.

The silver energy surrounding Raevor had intertwined with her golden resonance, forming luminous, intricate patterns that spread rapidly across the crystalline plateau. Instead of the forceful synchronization they experienced in combat, this energy moved in slow, expanding waves, responding to something neither of them had consciously commanded.

Their wrist displays flashed in unison, glowing brightly in the dark.

[SOVEREIGN–SENTINEL RESONANCE: ACTIVE.]

[EMOTIONAL SYNCHRONIZATION: DETECTED.]

[PAIR RESONANCE: 100%.]

A fourth notification appeared right beneath the standard readings.

[UNKNOWN RESONANCE PATTERN: EMERGING.]

Rhaevia stared at the holographic display in front of her. “That has never happened before.”

“No,” Raevor agreed, his hand remaining gently against her cheek.

His voice was steady, but his eyes remained intently fixed on her. “Are you all right?” he asked.

She almost laughed aloud at the sheer absurdity of it. They had just kissed beneath an alien sky, their combined energy had illuminated half the plateau, and his first concern was still whether she was unharmed.

“I’m fine, General,” she answered warmly.

“Good,” he said, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly.

She tilted her head, observing his calm demeanor. “You seem remarkably composed.”

“I am exercising considerable self-control,” he admitted smoothly.

Her laughter escaped before she could stop it. “Is that what we’re calling it?”

“It is the most appropriate military terminology I can provide,” he replied without missing a beat.

She leaned forward and pressed another, fleeting kiss to his lips. His composure faltered instantly, his eyes widening in surprise. That brief breach in his defenses made the entire evening worthwhile.

Before either of them could speak again, the crystalline plateau violently trembled beneath them.

The smile vanished from Rhaevia’s face in an instant.

A deep vibration rose from far beneath the ground, so immense that the structural crystals around them began to resonate like the strings of some colossal instrument. Golden light raced through the formations, converging directly beneath the place where they sat.

Raevor immediately rose, pulling Rhaevia behind him as his Sentinel energy flared in defense. “Something is awakening,” he warned.

Rhaevia felt it too, the pulsing sensation reverberating through her core. It was not the planetary network, nor was it Project Genesis. It was something far older, something that had been sleeping beneath the world since before the galaxy remembered its name.

Her wrist display flooded with flashing red warnings.

[ANCIENT ENERGY SIGNATURE DETECTED.]

[ORIGIN-CLASS RESONANCE: CONFIRMED.]

[UNKNOWN CORE ACTIVATION: IN PROGRESS.]

The plateau split with a thunderous crack that echoed into the night. Far beneath their feet, an immense golden light opened like a waking eye in the dark depths.

Then Project Genesis issued one final, ominous system warning.

[THE ORIGIN CORE HAS AWAKENED.]

The sudden surge of ancient energy tore through the newly opened fissure, sending waves of raw power cascading over the surrounding terrain. Raevor expanded his Sentinel barrier to shield Rhaevia from the atmospheric shockwave, his dark coat whipping wildly in the rising gale.

“The structural integrity of this plateau is failing,” Raevor reported, his eyes scanning the widening chasm. “We need to fall back to the research camp.”

Rhaevia placed a hand against his shoulder, holding her ground. “Look at the core, Raevor. It isn’t attacking us.”

He followed her gaze down into the abyss, where the blinding light began to stabilize into structured geometric patterns. The golden energy was flowing upward in synchronized streams, aligning directly with the resonance patterns their kiss had triggered moments prior.

“It responded to our pair resonance,” Raevor realized, his voice low.

“It didn’t just respond,” Rhaevia corrected, watching the intricate light constructs rise toward them. “It was waiting for it.”

The ground gave a final shudder as the energy stabilized into a brilliant, floating pillar of light that projected star maps into the night sky above. Ancient symbols, unreadable by standard Imperial databases, spun rapidly in orbit around the central core.

Raevor kept his body positioned between Rhaevia and the artifact, though he lowered his weapon stance slightly. “Can you read those readings, Rhaevia?”

“Project Genesis is trying to translate them,” she replied, checking her flickering wrist display. “The dialect matches the oldest archives in my memory.”

[DATA TRANSLATION IN PROGRESS…]

[ORIGIN CORE RECORD ACCESSED.]

A deep vibration echoed from the pillar, vibrating in harmony with their shared 100% resonance. The projected star map expanded exponentially, stretching far beyond the mapped sectors of the known Imperial star charts and displaying seven distinct, hidden star systems.

“Those coordinates don’t exist on any modern star map,” Raevor noted, his analytical mind already assessing the military implications. “They are located deep within uncharted space.”

“They were erased,” Rhaevia whispered, feeling a strange sense of familiarity washing over her consciousness. “Someone hid them intentionally.”

Raevor turned his head slightly to look at her. “Your ancient self?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted, stepping up beside him so their hands brushed once more. “But whatever is waiting in those seven systems, the awakening of this Origin Core just broadcasted our location to it.”

As if confirming her words, a low warning tone sounded from their command links.

[INCOMING TRANSMISSION DETECTED.]

[FREQUENCY: UNKNOWN ANCIENT CHANNEL.]

The holographic map above them flickered, the golden light twisting into the silhouette of a massive starship fleet entering spatial coordinates near the border of the plateau’s sector. A single audio stream breached their secure military comms, filling the night with a cold, refined voice.

“So, the Sovereign Guide has finally chosen her Sentinel,” the unknown voice echoed clearly through the speaker.

Raevor instantly stepped forward, overriding the frequency with his highest military authority. “Identify yourself.”

A soft, melodic laugh answered him over the comms. “There is no need for hostilities, General Veyr. I am merely checking on an old acquaintance.”

Rhaevia’s eyes narrowed as she recognized the underlying signature within the voice. “The Third Sovereign.”

“Correct, little sister,” the voice replied smoothly. “Enjoy your brief moment of peace on the crystal plateau. The awakening of the Origin Core has set the final clock in motion, and I will be seeing you both very soon.”

The transmission cut off abruptly, leaving only the sound of the wind sweeping across the fractured plateau.

Raevor looked down at Rhaevia, his expression resolute despite the monumental threat that had just declared itself. “It seems our peaceful life will have to wait.”

Rhaevia looked up at him, a faint, confident smile returning to her lips as she took his hand once more. “Then we had better make sure we win this war quickly, General.”
