Chapter 1632: Qimu the Social Boss, a Man of Few Words Who Spoils His Wife
Chapter 1632: Chapter 1587: Qimu the Social Boss, a Man of Few Words Who Spoils His Wife
Adan went back to the bedroom and finished spreading out the half-made quilt. The duvet cover was a plain gray-blue, not a single pattern on it, carrying a faint scent of osmanthus—the same fragrance as the sachets in the wardrobe.
Once the quilt was laid out, since the Imperial City was already turning cold at the end of November, Adan opened the window, curled up under the covers, and lay there with her eyes open, waiting for Marcus Quinn to come back. She’d grown used to having the man beside her; now, sleeping alone, the bed felt inexplicably cold and empty.
Waiting and waiting, she dozed off in a fog. Maybe it was the new place, maybe it was the unease in her heart—she fell into one dream after another.
In the dream, it was just her and her father, clinging to each other for dear life. For her sake he’d never taken another wife or had more children, afraid a stepmother might treat her badly, afraid that if a younger brother was born he’d steal her inheritance. Thinking back on it now, the two of them really had been too weak, too alone.
The dream shifted, and it turned into the days when she and Caspian Yarn went to school together.
“Adan, when you graduate from college, we’ll get married, okay?” The handsome young man reached out to ruffle her hair with a smile. “I can’t wait to take you home as my wife.”
She nodded shyly, and then saw Marcus Quinn appear from nowhere, expressionless as he raised a black, yawning gun and shot Caspian Yarn. The man’s delicate, fair face shattered like porcelain, splitting into pieces as blood gushed out.
Adan jolted awake with a start, sitting up, her whole body slick with cold sweat. Her fingertips trembled as she stared at the dim bedroom.
“Had a nightmare?” The man’s dry, broad palm brushed her forehead. Feeling her shaking badly, he immediately gathered her into his arms, murmuring softly, “Don’t be afraid.”
Marcus Quinn had just seen Sage Howard off; by the time the middle-aged man left, his steps were already unsteady, and he had to be helped into the car by his secretary and driver. Because Marcus was worrying about Adan, he closed the door and went to shower, afraid the smell of alcohol on him would choke her. He’d barely come out when he saw Adan jolting awake.
Marcus Quinn turned on the light and saw her little face bone-white, those large dark eyes full of fright. His chest tightened at once. He carefully wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and said in a low voice, “Adan, I’ll get you some hot water.”
Adan’s body was still wrapped tightly in his embrace. The man’s scent carried a faint trace of alcohol and the mint of the body wash he’d used, his body like a furnace. When she saw him start to get up for the water, Adan reached out and grabbed him, her throat dry as she rasped, “Marcus Quinn?”
“Yeah.” Marcus bent down to kiss her cheek and said hoarsely, “I’m here.”
Adan looked at the sharp lines of his face. He wasn’t one of those pale, gentle types in fashion now; he and Caspian Yarn were complete opposites. Marcus Quinn was wild, free, uninhibited, brimming with Strength—utterly unlike Caspian Yarn, that man who lived in polished refinement.
“You’re all I have now, Marcus Quinn.” Adan’s voice shook, her whole body cold as she burrowed further into his arms. She closed her eyes and said huskily, “Before I met you, I had a fiancé.”
Marcus Quinn’s whole body went taut. A dark glint flashed through the man’s eyes; his fingers clenched, the veins standing out. If she had a fiancé, then where had that man been when Adan was kidnapped and held captive?
“Tonight at the mall, I think I saw him. Are you going to blame me?” Adan lifted her head a little anxiously to look at him. Most men would mind; she had no idea what Marcus Quinn would think.
“None of this is your fault.” Seeing her frightened, bloodless little face, Marcus pulled her in tighter. His thin lips brushed lightly against her skin, their foreheads pressed together as they panted, hearts pounding like drums. He almost felt grateful for everything that had happened in the past—otherwise, he would never have met Adan.
“He’s treated me well ever since we were kids. His family has a lot of influence in Seacoast. What happened to my father, my kidnapping—it’s all tied up with our relatives. When the time comes, I might have to ask the Yarn Family for help. Marcus Quinn, please don’t be mad, okay?” Adan finished speaking, a restless unease rising in her.
A mighty dragon doesn’t crush the local snake. The Yarn Family truly did wield influence in Seacoast. If she wanted to cut down on trouble, asking them to mediate was the best way to solve things. She had to reclaim the Chase Family house, reclaim her parents’ belongings, and she still had to investigate her own kidnapping.
None of these were easy tasks.
Marcus Quinn tightened his hold on her, his gaze sharp and deep, his eyes filled with suppressed possessiveness. Adan was still a bit too naive. With his years of experience in blood and chaos, he knew that since her fiancé’s family held such sway locally, and yet someone still dared to go after her and the Chase Family without the slightest fear of that fiancé’s clan, it was obvious the Yarn Family wouldn’t be innocent in all this.
