Triple X System
Chapter 434: Over?
The blinding light didn’t just illuminate the courtyard; it tore through the fabric of the surrounding water, flash-boiling millions of gallons in a single fraction of a second. The shockwave expanded outward like a solid ring of iron, shattering every remaining marble archway and pulverizing the ancient sea-stone foundation into fine, floating silt.
Elara was thrown violently through the water as the protective barrier her mother had placed around her collapsed under the sheer pressure of the blast. She tumbled through the dark, murky current, slamming into the jagged remnants of a fallen pillar before coming to a halt in the shifting silt.
Her ears rang with a high-pitched, deafening whistle. Her chest burned with every ragged breath, but her eyes immediately snapped toward the center of the courtyard.
The dense cloud of superheated steam and stirred-up mud slowly drifted apart in the churning currents.
Where the grand courtyard’s central fountain and ancient seal had stood moments ago, there was now only a massive, black crater. The stone floor had been erased entirely, opening a gaping hundred-foot maw straight into the abyssal depths below.
In the center of that crater stood Queen Seraphina.
She had not fallen, but she was barely standing. Her obsidian-and-pearl trident was cracked down the middle, its tip buried deep into the stone floor to keep her upright. Her pristine pearl armor lay shattered in pieces around her feet, revealing deep, severe burns across her arms and chest where the light spear had scorched her flesh. Blood—a dark, shimmering indigo unique to the royal merfolk bloodline—drifted freely from her lips and shoulders, swirling into the cold sea water.
Above her, the six Grand Archmages descended slowly, their golden shields humming with residual spell-energy. Not a single thread of their crimson and white robes was out of place.
"Magnificent," Archmage Vane said, his voice cold and devoid of any praise despite his words. "To withstand the Judgment of the Seven Spires while bound by shadowless light... your physical density truly approaches that of the ancient leviathans, Sovereign."
"She is at her limit," Archmage Moros observed, his grey robes fluttering as he adjusted his rune-seals. "Her mana core is fractured. One more targeted strike will extinguish her life force completely."
Seraphina slowly lifted her head. Her face was pale, smeared with silt and her own shimmering blood, but her eyes—deep, dark, and endless as the trench—held no fear. She spat a mouthful of dark liquid into the water, her grip tightening on the fractured shaft of her trident.
"You... overestimate your light, surface rat," Seraphina rasped, her voice rough yet carrying a terrifying resonance that made the surrounding water vibrate. "You bring six grand casters to murder a queen whose strength is drained by holding the trench barriers... and you call yourselves masters of magic?"
Archmage Solon raised his plasma staff, its orb flaring with a harsh, golden glare. "History is written by the living, Sovereign. Your pride will not rebuild your kingdom."
"No," Seraphina whispered, her eyes shifting toward the shadows at the edge of the crater where Elara lay hidden under the rubble. "But my people will."
Before Solon could discharge his staff, Seraphina drove her cracked trident deep into the floor of the crater!
*THOOM!*
She didn’t summon a dragon or a tidal wave this time. Instead, she triggered the localized self-destruction of the upper sanctuary’s primary aqueduct! The pressurized water lines beneath the floor exploded violently, creating a massive, chaotic whirlpool that sucked tons of rubble, silt, and sea water downward into the abyss.
"A parting distraction!" Archmage Zephyr warned, forming a wind-barrier around herself and Vane. "She’s trying to collapse the upper shelf!"
"Focus fire on the crater!" Vane ordered, his voice sharp. "Do not let her body drift into the lower currents!"
While the six Archmages directed their combined elemental arrays into the chaotic whirlpool to suppress the water pressure, a quiet figure glided through the murky silt near the edge of the crater.
Grand Duchess Selena stepped past the falling stone slabs, her midnight-blue silk dress moving effortlessly through the water. She stopped right beside the fallen pillar where Elara was desperately trying to push herself up.
"Mother..." Elara choked out, coughing as silt filled her lungs. She reached out with a trembling hand, her daggers lost in the rubble. "Seraphina... she’s..."
Selena did not look toward the crater where the Archmages were bombarding the whirlpool with golden beams of light. She looked down at her daughter, her expression completely unreadable.
"The Queen has made her choice, Elara," Selena said smoothly, reaching down and grabbing Elara by her wrist. Her grip was soft, yet as unyielding as tempered steel. "And now you must make yours."
"Let me go!" Elara thrashing against her mother’s grip, but the kinetic pressure surrounding her body made her movements sluggish, like fighting under miles of frozen ice. "I can help her! I can—"
"You can do nothing," Selena interrupted, her cold blue eyes locking onto Elara’s. "Look at them, child. Those six men above us have leveled entire city-states. They have extinguished ancient bloodlines without dropping a single tear. You are a child playing with water daggers against men who command the sun."
Selena pulled Elara closer, bringing her face inches from her daughter’s. "I did not spend twenty years climbing the blood-stained hierarchy of the Clover Council just to watch my only daughter die in a muddy trench for a dying kingdom. You are coming with me to the Spire."
"I would rather die down here with my people!" Elara spat, her eyes burning with pure hatred.
Selena didn’t flinch. A faint, sad smile touched her lips. "You always had your father’s tragic passion. But passion without power is just an invitation to an early grave."
Selena raised her free hand, a small, intricate silver emblem shaped like a three-leaf clover glowing softly in her palm. A subtle, tranquilizing wave of sleep-mana washed over Elara’s mind.
Elara’s eyelids grew impossibly heavy. The chaotic sounds of the battle above—the roaring plasma, the shattering stone, the cold commands of Archmage Vane—began to fade into a dull, distant hum.
"Yua... Kyle..." Elara slurred, her strength completely draining away as her vision turned black. "Don’t..."
"Rest, Elara," Selena whispered softly, catching her daughter’s limp body before she hit the silt. "When you wake up, this domain will be nothing more than a bad dream."
Selena turned, holding her unconscious daughter in her arms, and glided toward the outer edge of the upper sanctuary where a private, high-speed council transport vessel was hidden in the shadow of the cliffside.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the swirling crater, the golden light beams finally ceased.
The water cleared, revealing the utter devastation of the central hall. The upper sanctuary was completely ruined, its ancient columns fallen, its ceiling erased, and its holy pools contaminated with boiling light-mana and dark silt.
Archmage Vane floated down into the center of the crater, his crimson robes fanning out around him.
In front of him lay the obsidian-and-pearl trident, broken cleanly into two pieces. Beside it, a pool of dark, shimmering indigo blood marked the spot where Queen Seraphina had stood.
Her body was gone—sucked down into the chaotic currents of the lower abyss when the floor collapsed.
"Is she dead?" Archmage Solon asked, landing heavily beside Vane, his plasma staff still smoking with residual heat.
"Her mana core was fractured, and she took three direct hits from our combined array," Archmage Moros said, inspecting the pool of indigo blood with his rune-seals. "No creature of this domain, sovereign or not, can survive those injuries without immediate core restoration. If the blast didn’t kill her, the abyssal pressure below will finish the job."
"Search the debris regardless," Vane commanded coldly. "I want her trident’s core retrieved, along with any royal archives remaining in the lower vaults. Archmage Zephyr, secure the perimeter. Do not allow any surviving merfolk to escape toward the outer reefs."
"Understood," Zephyr replied, floating away toward the broken dome.
Vane turned his gaze toward the dark, yawning trench that led down to the Serpent’s Maw. Distant, muffled explosions and flashes of dark red light were still visible in the far depths—the remnants of Yua’s violent rampage against The Root.
"It seems the execution squad is taking longer than anticipated with the vampire pureblood," Vane murmured, his red eyes narrowing slightly. "Thorne and Vesper should have cleared that sector ten minutes ago."
"Shall we descend and assist them?" Solon offered, raising his staff.
"No," Vane said, turning away from the trench. "The Root exists to bleed for us. If they fail to kill a starving leech, they are useless to the Fifth Seat. We proceed with the primary objective: securing the oceanic core before the Council’s transport fleet arrives."
As the Grand Archmages began their methodical sweep of the ruined sanctuary, deep within the dark, suffocating abyss below, a single, bloody hand reached out from a heap of falling stone.
Far beneath the reach of the golden light, in the ice-cold currents of the deep trench, Queen Seraphina drifted through the pitch-black water. Her eyes were closed, her breathing almost nonexistent, but the broken piece of her trident—still clutched tightly in her bleeding hand—began to pulse with a faint, deep-blue heartbeat.
The upper sanctuary had fallen. The sovereign was defeated. But deep in the dark, where the light of the Clover Council could never reach, the ancient ocean was beginning to wake up.
